I know how to get a core by sliding a hollow silver tube over the mandrel but how do you flair it to make the core fold back over the pucker of the bead and get it so neat? :pout: I've practiced with copper tubing but still can't figure out how to flair it properly.](*,) Would sure appreciate either a link or a tut from someone!! Thanks.

You are very welcome. Would love to see pix. I tried to read the tutorial and it seemed so complicated I decided not to read too closely.

Well, It may be that I've done the core beads before, just not the flairing part successfully that I understand it. I remember a while back when I was using copper tubing to core my beads and then desided to flair the ends, It wasn't so understandable until a few hit and misses. It's really not as hard as it sounds. Kinda like mapquest and all the access roads included in the mileage and turns etc. That confuses the dickens outa me.LOL. I kinda like to get to the chase.
I just need to practice the cores flair. I've got the core part down pretty well. I've also used pyrex and built my bead right on the tubing. That's fairly easy to do even with a hothead but takes some practice. You sure get a nice bead without the release on it. Makes the bead really clean. . I like using this method when I'm making emplosion beads. No messy cores.
Thanks again for the link. I really appreciate it.

Evan Hollander has a video that explains this technique really well. At the moment I can't find his web site address but you might try to google Dawn and Evan Hollander or email me and I will find it for you!

Ah... cool! I just learned how to do silver caps/riveted beads. Glad to know it's pretty much the same concept. Hmm... I guess I need to go get a dapping set and disc cutters...

Oh and I found http://contenti.com has some real good prices this stuff.

Thanks for tutorial.... it was very useful to see the process, but would have welcomed a less laboured version! I had trouble staying awake as so much of it was rather obvious. Not wanting to labour my point too much..... I am really grateful to have learned this technique!

I know this is the lazy way, but over at retro glass tools there is a bead liner that does all the work for you. I have one of their bead cap tools and my lampwork group recently bought a bead liner and we are planning bead lining get togethers. Here is a link to the site.....

Yeah that retro tool kit looks yummy. I just don't have the bucks right now. Even when I get them I'd have to choose between this and an e forming kit. I really really want one of those too!

Me too. Every time I look at some new tool or kit -- electroforming, silver coring, anything -- it seems like it costs a thousand bucks. I can think of ten things I want right now and they all cost a thousand each. Very discouraging sometimes, but I try to use it as motivation. Key word: try.

Where is a good supply for silver tube? Any in northern California?

Mike -

My pleasure. Hope you enjoyed the tutorials. I get most of my silver tubing from Rio Grande Jewelry supply. They are located in New Mexico, but they are pretty quick on shipping. They have a couple of different catalogs, one for gemstones, findings, silver and gold and another for tools that are pretty extensive. Usually from order to shipment is about 4 days for me and I'm in northern Illinois.
