View Full Interactive Version Of This Page : Rusty Mapp Gas
Hi - I have a question. The last four or five times I've purchased MAPP gas (from Lowe's and Walmart) they have been rusty. It says on the back of the container that you should discard the canisters if they have rust. I've brought them back each time and I started checking them before buying them, but my boyfriend just forgot to check and brought back two more rusty ones.
Needless to say, this is annoying. Is this a real safety issue or can I use the canister anyway? I can take a picture if that would help...
Thank you

I don't know what the official word on this is (well, there is that pesky warning on the canisters), but I refuse to use a rusty can of Mapp, even if it is just a tiny bit of rust. I do not want any hint of compromised integrity in the personal bomb sitting on my lap.
Well that has been my thinking, but I am starting to wonder how the company can possibly stay in business if so many of their canisters rust, and and then have to be disposed of.

Are you taking a little surface rust film.... Or big nasty pits or scale that go deep into cannister?....
If its a little surface rust.... Remember cannister is disposable anyway... Why would they go to great expense to put really durable finish on throw away item?
If its deep pits or heavy scale it is dangerous. Do not even take it out of store!....

Here are pictures. There are two cannisters. The first three pictures are the first canister, and the last two pictures are the second one.

Ok - I would pass up those tanks - rust and scale on the threads can easily get into the port and passed up into the torch.
The problem is that there is too much moisture in the air in the building where these are stored, and the threads are of course bare steel.
Don't attempt to clean the threads, you'll just make it worse.
Find another supplier!

I'm in agreement with MIke on canisters like ones displayed in picture..

Okay, I'll return them to Walmart today and yell at them. Thank you for your help!
