Hope someone can help me. . . I have a Piranha and a Devilbliss oxy con. still in the box. I've been patiently waiting to set them up. Finally got some utilities (electricity and water) hooked up at the studio late Friday Afternoon. Was going to go with Natural Gas but that doesn't look possible. What do I need to hook up to propane? Hoses, Regulators or special fittings? Can I get the stuff locally? I think the tank will be set up this afternoon.
Thanks for all your help

To setup up small BBQ style propane tank (20 pound) you will need a tank of course, also a regulator, you can go with a adjustable regulator, same as acetylene welding regulator found locally at any welding supply store (check yellow pages) and a hose.... Usually people use what is called welding "twin hose" and just carefully separate hoses , one (green) to oxy con and the fuel (red)) to propane regulator.
An option may be to get a BBQ style regulator and put on propane tank, it will be preset for a pressure of about 1/3 psi, but than may be not be enough pressure to satisfy torch... SOME -not BBQ style regulators may be adjustable to a bit higher pressure IF it is nit a SEALED unit....
Also consider that it is a requirement in most states that the propane is required to put into metallic piping when brought into a residence from an out side source...

Ok update. I guess we will be going with a large propane tank but they cant put it in til the end of November. In the mean time the propane company will be letting us use a few 100 lb tanks. I don't mean to sound dumb But, My set up is about 30 ft away from where the propane is going to be piped in how do I get it to where I want it for torching? Is it piped over then I use the hose?
I hope I'm making sense. I'm just so excited to finally have a normal set up. This was all supposed to happen in June. Here it is October 30th. I just want to make sure I have everything so I can torch tonite!
Dale thanks for the quick response.

Best case scenario would be have them bring propane from tank at 5 psi (tank regulator) to low pressure regulator (1/4 - 1/3 psi for appliances) at house!.... Put a leg off the 5 psi supply before low pressure regulator at house to provide 5 psi (or less with your adjustable regulator) to your torch....
With tank regulator set at 5 psi (NFPA approved pressure) and low pressure regulator (appliance pressure) you have best situation you can possible have...Because you can have the 5 psi available at house to supply torch. All you have to do is add approved plumbing (at 5 psi) to studio area.
Problem is going to be to convince gas plumber to setup tank regulator at 5 psi and splitting off supply line for torch.... They generally want to put the low pressure (appliance pressure) at the tank location...

For a Piranha, I would go with the smaller tanks if possible. You will use very little propane. In my shop we have a Barracuda and Tiger Shark running about 8-9 hours a day, and we go through a 20# propane tank about two to three times a month, if that.
A 100# tank is a lot to have sitting around for what little propane you're going to be using. Unless you are going to be heating with propane as well...

Maybe I missed something, but eventually complete home will be on propane. Why mess with #20 tanks when there will be 500 gallons (more or less) 30 feet away.... And somebody else fills it!

Maybe I missed something. I thought the house was on natural gas, but the natural gas wouldn't work for the torch....

Thanks for the diagram it really helped explain what I needed. Propane company was running late yesterday so I didn't get my delivery. I'm going to shoot for Wednesday.
Sorry about the confusion. . .its a 52X47 pole barn since its not our primary residence utility co wants to charge us commercial rates. Propane ended up being much cheaper!
Thanks

Pole Barn ( if there are no living quarters) .... Gas rules change!... In your favor..... You can bring gas in at higher pressures as it does not fall under the RESIDENCE ruling.... BUT I do no have the proper numbers ( pressure wise) for you.... You might be able to bring torch propane supply at up to 20 psi. Its all in the NFPA documents Part 58.

Dale thank you for the info and the diagram. It made the set up with the propane company very easy. I was able to move my studio in this past weekend and was able to do some torching on Sunday. Now I just have to get used to my new surroundings and set up.
Thanks again, you're a wealth of information!
