Jwelsh - Would you mind posting a closeup of the heat shield he has set up? I need to put one of those together for my bench as well, and I am looking for inspiration.

Here is a picture of my work area in my garage studio.

OK Jwelsh and Emort, I see your garages are NOT like mine, I don't even have insulation and winter is coming to CT.

Man. How do you guys work without glass scattered all over the bench? I couldn't work in an area that clean...

:D

I can only speak for me, and that picture was taken right after I had put in my new Lynx, so I hadn't actually worked at it yet! I sure don't look like that now! :p

Well, I didn't say it is always that clean.... However, I do try and clean up my bench about every 2 torch days so that I don't pick up dust, leftover frit, etc. on the hot ends when I put a rod down....or in my arms.

actually jeff's area is NEVER clean... i spent the other day for over 2 hours trying to clean it .. he hates when i do this....even put in air fresheners..\\:D/ yes that's a flat screen... i picked it up at bj's $300.00 .
anyways here's apic of his shield.. he got this from his day time glassblowing job.. i'll see if he can get another or where you can get one.. i know it's just plexy(sp?) glass.

You can make a simple screen like that with a trip to Lowe's and about $10.

A couple pieces of aluminum and a small sheet of plexi are all you need. I've been thinking about doing something similar myself, but to date have been too lazy to do it.

May I ask why you have that shield? Does it prevent little pieces of glass to jump into your face? (Sorry if this is a stupid question.)

jeff has his shield and uses it mostly when he does marble or large vases or figurines to keep the heat away from his body! when he makes little stuff he simply removes the glass piece!

Wow!!These photos are soo cool. You all have home studios nicer than my commericial space!! (Although Concrete IS fireproof!)
I'm interested in the heat shirld thing too. I'm having a lot of trouble with middle age dry eye when I have too much heat in my face!! Arrgh.
