wondering if there is an on line "encyclopedia" of sorts... something that explains to this "wet-behind-the-ears-torchless-wanna-be-pyro" what the hell ya'll are talking about LOL
Like someone got upset that her mom mixed her glass, now I am smart enough to realize that different glasses have a different melting point, though I had no idea it would explode (why does it?) but I have NO idea what the difference is between boro and moretti etc...
and what is a stringer?
and how in the heck do you make a cane? (not that I will be anytime soon but I'm really wondering how you get the glass to make a design and then make that into a rod, it's not like you can roll it between your palms like fimo)
I keep hearing talk of ventilation... I didn't realize glass put off toxic fumes... or is it from the gas??

I've got a ton of questions... I'm taking a class on Friday (yippee!!!) (anyone heard of Tina Julich?) and thinking about how soon I might be able to get a torch... anyway...

Camie,
There is an inside kind of joke I have with a group of people here, when I am so totally confused about something. I say "Can I buy a clue? Use a life line? Call a friend?"

I can see how so much of this "talk" that is second nature to most of us would be very confuseing to you or anyone else, who didn't know what it was or had not seen many of the things made before.

Wanna call a friend? I'll be happy to call you and try and explain most of it.

You might try a GOOGLE search with "Glass Glossary" in search string... In past I have found several that have alot of good information...

Here is just a few...

http://www.glassonline.com/infoserv/dictionary/index.html
http://www.glasslinks.com/glossary.htm
http://www.cmog.org/index.asp?pageId=687&mnu=5&mid=mi87
http://www.great-glass.co.uk/glass%20notes/glossa-e.htm

And it just goes on from there... Think google returned 3,480,000 or so mentions of search string..

Do you have Corina's book...Passing the Flame....If I remember correctly....she pretty much explains most of the things you are asking...and just hang around here and the answers will become self evident with time.....sorta like living in a foreign country and learning the language cause ya have to!

Also ...use the search function...the answer will pop right up!

I made use of my local public library's interlibrary loan program to find every book I could on lampworking before I even dared to light my torch! Also you'll find alot of info by searching the popular glass forums. Here's a mini- tutorial on pulling stringer from E-How (http://www.ehow.com/how_18123_make-stringers-glass.html), if you scroll to the bottom of the page you'll find links that may give you basic answers to some of your questions. You'd be surprised how much information is available on the web just by using google and typing lampworking and whatever term you need the definition of.
Also, Cauldron Creations (http://www.cauldroncreations.com/tutorialindex.html) has many tutorials. Hope this helps!!
