Dichro? What's in it that makes it different from using foils?

dichroic glass is metals fumed onto the surace of the glass in a chamber. I don't know all the science behind it, but the whole point of dichro is that is reflects one color and transmits another. Dichroic means "two colors".

From what I understand, the metallic layers described in the link are not a solid layer, but more like a broken layer of particles, kind of like the difference between pieces of glitter versus a solid sheet of foil. Different metals produce different colors. And the angles created by the layers of broken particles creates that 3-dimensional sparkly effect that nothing but dichro can give you.
