This is a tutorial on how 'I' make my goddess beads.
It has a lot to do with heat control and your use of marvering and shaping.
So if you are offended by the nude female body, please do not continue into this tutorial.

Now for those of you who are ready...
Here it is...
Sarah J Schalken's Goddess Bead Tutorial
Jacinthe

Step 1.
You need to make your base bead. I normally start at the waist area and then add on to the right side for the legs and the left side for shoulders and head.
http://members.home.nl/kschalken/goddesstutorial/steps/step1.jpg
http://members.home.nl/kschalken/goddesstutorial/steps/step1a.jpg
http://members.home.nl/kschalken/goddesstutorial/steps/step1b.jpg
After getting the base bead to the approximate length that I will want the body of the goddess, I then add a few wraps of glass to where the shoulders and hips should be.
Jacinthe
2005-06-12, 2:51am
Step 2.
Fill in glass for legs, from hips to knees.

Jacinthe
2005-06-12, 2:53am
Step 3.
Shape the leg area pushing the hip area out and the knee area in (making a small cone sahpe)
Add glass for the shoulder/chest area and shape it into a small cone

Step 4.
Adding the head and fixing shape
I add the head because I feel that it look incomplete on my beads without. Some other goddess beads look fabulous without the heads and it works great as well, this is just one of my own little quirks. (my goddess beads have heads, but no arms or feet - go figure  )

Step 5.
Heating, and flattening the front of the legs and back
I like to flatten the front of the legs (it makes it easier for adding the details for me) and the back as well, kind of makes the chest and backside stick out a bit, it also makes the hips and shoulders a bit wider.
So I heat the front of the legs (I choose which ever side seems to be the flattest, giving the backside more roundness and then the opposite side for the back)
Gently I press it against my marver from the tummy down, flattening it evenly.
Then I heat the upper back/shoulder area and gently press it against my marver from the waist up to flatten it as well.

Step 6.
Adding front leg details
Gently heat the front of the legs, it doesnt have to be glowing, just soft enough to be able to use a tool to press into the glass
I find the middle of the flattened area, and gently press my chisel/whimzitool/razorblade carefully to make the line seperating the two legs.
Then I gently heat again, and add the V just at the top edge of the line (keeping in mind approximately where in real life this area sits in comparison with the thighs and hips)

http://members.home.nl/kschalken/goddesstutorial/steps/step6a.jpg
Jacinthe
2005-06-12, 3:08am
Step 7.
Add backside details
I now gently heat the back of the legs, find the middle of the area and gently press as with the front the line down the middle
Next I gently press a slight curved line to away from me, making one butt cheek
Then the other side, pressing slight curved line towards me
Finally I press from the point where the butt cheek lines meet the leg line another line going straight up, completing the butt form
Then just for my peace of mind, I even give the little ladies a spine, by gently heating her back and pressing one small indentation into her back in line with her leg and bottom lines.

Step 8.
Adding fullness to belly, bottom and shoulders and the belly button
This is where my goddess become mine, I like to create my goddesses with a little bit of a tummy, nice rounded buttocks, and shoulders (kind of like the marble statues where the arms have been lost over the years) and a belly button.
So I dot on some glass on the tummy, and on each butt cheek and then on each shoulder, keeping an eye that I've not got the torse twisted to the hips when doing this (sometimes this is a nice effect, then it looks like she is moving some)
Then I carefully melt the added glass in, keeping an eye on all the details so that they don't melt back in, do not fear though, if they do you can always carefully re-add them.
Then after all is carefully melted into their perspective places, I gently heat the tummy again and use my poker tool and poke the belly button gently into the tummy.

Step 9.
Adding the breasts
Now we come to the part where you can make them as big or as small as you like.
I try most of the time to keep the in comparison with the rest of the body.
Carefully add two dots on the front chest area and carefully melt them, turning the bead to make them move to whichever side or down depending on how you want them to hang.

2005-06-12, 3:25am
Step 10.
Adding Hair and other details
Some people add dots to the head, some flowers, some faces, some hair, some just leave it as it is... each way is your personal way of finishing the goddess bead.
I put hair on my goddesses by using twisties, that I have made before hand.
Keeping the bead gently heated all over, I then begin heating the end of the twistie and apply it as close to the head end mandrel without making it stick to the mandrel.
Then slowly lay it carefully with great heat control, down the middle of the back.
This is where you can play with the hair, adding layers and making it look like she has curly hair. Play and find out what works best for you.

Final Step.
Adding the nipples.
I use a small stringer of pink coral and carefully add nipples to the breasts. You can leave them off or put them on, its whatever you are comfortable with.

Please share your pictures of your tries, failures and successes. Its always a good learning experience for everyone.
BTW I do work on a Hothead. I've been working on my hothead since May 16, 2003. Once a month with our local beadmakers, I play on a minor, but I love my little HotHead and wouldn't trade it in for the world.
BTW This is what happens when you don't pay attention and keep your goddess warm, she gets cranky and kick you hard enough to break her own leg off.
http://members.home.nl/sjsglasswork/goddesstutorial/brokeninkblue.jpg
So be careful and remember to flash that goddess and keep her whole body warm, otherwise she gets mad. This happens because of the 'shaping' of the bead, parts are thinner, thicker, and not an even roundness. Just remember to keep her warm at all times, not molten, otherwise you lose all your details, but just keep warming her, remember when working on her head, to occassionaly flash her legs in the flame and the other way around. :)

Sarah

What an excellent tutorial Sarah! All the pictures are sooooooo helpful. I've tried to follow tutorials before, but it didn't work out. I was so excited yesterday that this one was!!!! This is my first goddess. Her breasts aren't as lop-sided as they look, the scanner caught a hot spot or something. She is not quite 2 inches tall.

ok...i did it!! I attempted my first goddess bead yesterday....and a few things went wrong...
first...I used an off white/cream colored glass for the body for lack of having an actual "flesh tone" color handy. the glass now looks like white with black marbling...sooty like streaks all thru it. kinda ok IF u want her to look like she is carved from marble but not the effect I was shooting for but oh well...
second...I think i just made her too big...and she cracked..thermal shock? like while i was working on her hair her butt cracked...and not where it is supposed to have a crack if u get my drift...lol! anyhow....
so...anyone have a suggestion on what color to use for "flesh"?
OR can anyone tell me why the color got so sooty looking? I use a hot head with MAPP gas for my work.
Thanks in advance for any pointers... am going to try again tonight.

I could swear I answered Sharon this morning...
Oh well I'll do it again.
Flesh tones... hmmm... you could always try and mix your own, but I use plain ole moretti colours. Normally ivory or dk ivory.
Now the soot... it could be from working too close to the torchhead or from dirty MAPP. My guess is prolly more working too close to the torch.
Crack... happens when you don't keep the bead completely warmed all the time. It takes practice and lots of remembering. But just flash the whole bead once in a while to keep it warm in the flame. If you are working on the head, flash the feet once in a while. If you are working in the middle, don't forget to flash the ends... just after every time you add something, just give it a quick flash in the flame to keep the heat even.
Hugs,
Sarah

Sarah,
Thank you for the tutorial. I didn't even really know where to start before I saw your tutorial! I made a goddess (the headless, Venus DeMilo-style), and I was very pleased with my first try. Unfortunately I worked a bit low in the flame so she is a little "sooty" and a little piece on the edge cracked, but I think I will etch her and maybe put her in a mosaic. I made another and I am waiting to see if she comes off the mandrel OK--Nope, it cracked. She is built a bit more like Barbie and a bit less than a goddess, but maybe I was projecting my own wishful thinking into my work! LOL

Anna - Thank you for sharing your goddess with us! It just goes to show everyone that all it takes is a little inspiration a little direction and you can fly on your own wings! Ever goddess that has been shown has followed these directions, but each one has their own little special uniqueness! I love that about glass. We all start from the same spot and end up sometimes on totally different tangents and sometimes we parallel each other creating work that is fabulous in all its different flavours, colours, shapes and uniqueness!
Thank you everyone!

Very NICE goddess Kerry!
What glass were you using? It looks like a type of glass that strikes, and unstrikes when heated too much.
Keep up the good work. And just so you don't feel bad, I did my first pics for over 1.5 years with scanning them on my scanner. :D
Get yourself a small flat box that you can put a white background into and it will help TONS. Then you can use a photoeditor to make the background white and that should make the rest of the colours right too. :D

Tried my first goddess last night- a tiny little thing that's- well, she's special ;-)
keeping in mind I'm a full out beginner- what tool is the best for creating the lines for the legs and other assorted body parts? I have only the basics and found I was either sticking to the bead or getting lines that looked too rough. I'm sure 90% was user error and learning curve- but I want to go in with all advantages possible!

I use dental tools for alot of things, I have a nice collection, look around for dental tools and when you see one with an interesting shape that you think might come in handy, buy it. You can also use just a butter knife or a razor tool. You have to dip the tool in water occasionally or it will get too hot and then it will stick to the bead. Don't work with your metal tools in the flame.
I use a butter knife to make my goddesses. Stainless steal butterknife.
Phoenix

Thanks Teresa and Kevan- I have a stainless knife- but i bet I was letting it get too hot as I tried to keep working it. I just took a look at her at lunch and am actually much happier than I thought I'd be for number one.
Keep a cup of water on your bench and dip your knife it to cool it.
My butterknife is one of those weird ones with the point on the end, It's not really shaped like a knife.
Why do they use those for butter? I don't get that.

Some lady on one of the forums I'm on (I forgot who - otherwise I'd give credit where credit is due) has a scalpel that she burned the tip off of accidentally. It works perfect for those tuchas creases. She calls the tool "the buttmaker". I'm still laughing over the thought of her marketing those....imagine the packaging....

I made a great find last night- I have those seafood tool for crab- a two prong fork on one end and a dent on the other- the perfect size for butt cheeks!
My second goddess attempt cracked a leg overnight. I made number three and four last night as well- they didn't look as good as two, but they were more individual as I played with the tutorial to make my own style. I haven't been abel to check on them yet. I'll put up some photos later as well.

Here's my first try- this was before I had tips on the tools being cool- so the markings are definately improved in later versons.
#2 has sharp edges (so does this one)
#3 and #4 both cracked right at the back of one ankle- I suspect I was not paying enough attention to even heat.

Hi Everyone, I am rather in awe at the moment with godesses. Ive just got a new torch mini cc and am having fun with it. I've tried the godesses a couple of times and am happy with the shape but I am having trouble keeping it all together. I figure I am not flashing them enough but they are just not cracking when I am working on them they completely open apart can anyone suggest what I should be doing differently - should I be working further out in the flame - also what size would anyone say is sort of the "normal" as if there is anything that is normal size for them maybe I am making them too big - I think my last 1 was about almost 2 inches and she is completely cracked all over - I did get 1 of the mandrel yesterday but she has a crack from the bottom to halfway up the legs straight along the leg crease - I think I probably need more glass in the legs - I will take some pics and post them later - thanks for your help.

What a great tutorial. Here my first attempts. Sadly I let the leg area cool down too much so there are cracks. But will definitely be making more.

Thanks for the wonderful tutorial, Sarah! It certainly is inspirational. And the many useful tips within the process will help to illuminate the making of other forms of beads as well.

Hi...
I spotted this tutorial earlier, but i did not have the guts to try and make a goddess...
Yesterday i did...
Here's the result:

Her feet got a little too cool when doing her hair, but hey... for the first one, she's not half bad i guess...
She's great!
Di, I like the flames. She looks hot.lol

Thanks Kevan!....I love your goddesses too!
Sarah, your tutorial got me started on goddesses, and now they have evolved and grown....and I've been making gods too, but they might be a bit too anatomical for some of the more restrained sensibilities here as they tend to cause a stir on the Aussie Beadmakers Forum whenever I post pics of them.....
Here's a couple of the latest goddesses....

Thanks Elaine!....I've been thinking about doing just that....will have to figure out how to put the warnings up first though.....don't want to get kicked off such a wonderful source of information and inspiration, no do I?!?;-)
And yes, my winged gddess is unfurling her wings....I'm a silversmith as well as lampwork beadmaker and I made her specifically to go inside a sterling silver/gold/copper cage I'm curently making, all to be hung of a sterling silver handmade chain and clasp....I'll post pics when I've finished in the jewellery section....if it all works out to plan, that is....
Cheers!

Thank you so much for getting me started on making goddesses. I honestly had no idea where to start before finding this tutorial.
I just realized that I never got around to posting pictures of any goddess I made using your tut.
I made this one in March '07 and it is still my favorite so far. I think it was the 5th or 6th one I had done. I turned it into a pendant and wear it all the time. Who doesn't want an extra pair of bewbies on their chest from time to time? 8)

Wow, Di - this is especially gorgeous!!! The wing work is just great!
Gotta say, though - I just don't get it!!! Here, in America, we seem to have no difficulty being all about the feminine T&A; hell, shows like "Top Model", etc., practically show gals in their birthday suits! Yet, the second we even mention the (masculine) "P" word, everyone gasps, mothers cover their children's eyes, and the fainting begins! What Up with all that?
And although most women I know enjoy dressing at least a bit sexy and leaving lots to the imagination, most men have no difficultly dropping their drawers and letting it all hang out with the slightest prompting~!
Thanks for sharing your work - everyone!

Kevan sorry that Flicker was causing you troubles with your goddess beads. I don't understand that all, its just a natural form. I guess some people are just too sensitive at times.
Way to go to everyone trying goddess beads! Keep pursuing new boundaries and don't let one mistake set you back, try again and push yourself harder!

I love seeing the goddesses being posted.
Everyone who has tried the tutorial has taken the basics and made the bead their own.
It just goes to show that sharing something like this isn't a bad thing.
Keep pushing yourselves to create and try new things.
