Anise/anice white is not being all that nise/nice to me. [-(
Trying to heat it as slowly as humanly possible as far out as i could in the flame (i'm on a hot head) the sucker just snapped and snapped and snapped - six inches worth - until I gave up. I've got half a pound of the stuff. I love the way it looks. Any suggestions?

Stick it part way in your kiln, when you're ready to use it, it's already warm.....least that's what I do.

I read somewhere that there might be a bad batch of it, one that is particularly shocky. I just ordered another pound, so I hope that doesn't happen to me!

I completely hate and despise my anice white. I hope that a studio gremlin comes and throws it all on the ground saving me the agony of trying to use it.

LOL
I tried talking to it, you know, nice anise, nice anise. there there.
it's somehow a relief to know i'm not alone. Hmmm. How about a pound of anise white frit????
j
Anise white frit is great! There is another reason for keeping your HH around.... it is easier to use anise with less heat. A LOT less heat.

As I use a hot crock pot full of vermiculite to cool my beads - I prewarm my shocky rods by sticking them in there to heat up a bit first -
It helps - but doesnt fix - still often get an inch or so of rod attached to the half-a-bead on the mandrel - so the bead ends upbeing whatever size the chunk of rod causes it to be -
clear as mud, right? Sorry...

Roger Parramore showed Corina and I a neat way to heat all rods, even the really shocky ones. This is for an oxy/propane torch, however. Anyway, turn off the oxy, turn the propane ALL the way up until the flame is about to blow aout, then place the rod in the propane flame. He positioned the rod so that about 8 inches or so was in the flame. He rotated it there for a little bit, then re-adjusted his flame and stuck the rod straight in. This was Anice White he was using. No pop, no shock. Easy. I am not sure how you would accomplish this on a hothead, however. Sigh....probably shouldn't have posted this at all. Sorry.

I know exactly what you are talking about - that inch or so of rod that snaps off and hangs from the bead in progress. Incredibly frustrating - I have a hard enough time avoiding wonky beads without that little chunk :)

Shesmi :-D
If only we could think of a sexy name for that "shape" of bead - we could claim it as a design feature?

um... it's a very .. um ....manly ... bead
"is that bead wrapped in anise white, or is he just glad to see me?"

You can get a full propane flame by blocking the vent holes on a HH. Same way you work a reduction frit.
Thanks for the tip Kimberly! :)

 Good ones!
I have this problem with yellow opalino on my HH.
What I did was take all the 1/2" pieces that flew off the rod end and put them on my torch mounted marver. Made a bead or two while they heated up, then took each one with my tweezers, introduced it to the flame-way out. Attached it to a clear rod, and piece by piece built up a gather. I pulled it into a fat stringer but I guess you could just use it from the gather.
I have to *really* want to make a yellow opalino bead to take such trouble.
Which is not that often...it's a PITA
