Hi guys! Recently Ameritool asked me for permission to use my faceting tutorial on their website, and of course I was tickled pink! They have it up now: http://www.ameritool-inc.com/faceting-tutorial.htm

They also wanted me to let people know that they would love submissions of finished work for their gallery. :)

thanks for the tutorial, kalera!! i stumbled across it awhile back and played around with grinding some, but retook the tutorial again and read closely to make sure i was doing everything correctly. excellent tut!!

this is one of my big hole giants that didn't come out as planned so i used it as my test bead for your facet tut, got the mirror finish (although there's no glare in the pics here to show it) and if it weren't for the fact that the reactive glass i used caused some pitting and bubbling (which i love in encased beads) the faceted surfaces would be nice round mirrors. i'll have facet out some good beads, next!!

thanks again!!

Great tut, and , of course, now I'll have to put a grinder on my wish list. Do you think there's a good reason to have the 8" over the 6" for most beaders?

OK I'm just not getting the final stages right. I love to do big hole organics with ground sides. Those are fine. My transparents suck though! I can't get the clarity I want in the two final grinding stages. They just look scratched. I did one in Andrea Guarino's class, of course with her help ever step of the way. What am I doing wrong now? Help would be really appreciated. I ground so much last weekend that my thumb bled all over my beads, lol! I couldn't figure out where the spots came from in my light box. Yuck! I've tried the tutorial. It's great but I'm not.

My guess is that the scratches are from not grinding long enough in the 2nd and 3rd stages... I have run into that problem too, and the deeper scratches that are left over from the 1st stage are showing up when you get to the final polish stage.

Thanks Kalera I was thinking they were coming from the 3rd stage. I'll try going back and starting with the 2nd stage again.

I think I've figured it out. I'm going from a 200 grit to a 600 grit in the 2nd and 3rd stages. I bit the bullet and ordered a 325 mesh.

Is there a difference betwwen diamond grit discs and mesh? I havean Inland that has a series of grit discs, but they are all metal. I still have scratches and am wondering if mesh is different and would help. Any ideas?

Thanks, guys! :D

FireNwire, "grit" and "mesh" are just two words to describe the same thing, which is the coarseness of the grinding discs... the number that describes the "grit" or "mesh" is the important thing to know, as you want to start with a lower (coarser) number, and move up to a higher, finer number until you get to the final polish stage.
