Who's going to the International Flameworking Conference (http://www.salemcc.org/glass/flameworking.htm)?

If you didn't know, this is a GREAT (and very affordable!) conference which happens in southern New Jersey. Very laid back, but lots of incredible demos and suppliers galore!

March 16-18.

I AM, I AM!!!!! Second year going. LOVE IT! My friend and I are arriving on Friday but we are going to Wheaton Village (another MUST DO). Last year the demo on Saturday evening was amazing - a Carlisle torch made out of blown glass. And the murini demo was great too. PM'ing you.

John and I will be there.

I want to go but I think there are too many bridges in the way. I'll have to pull out a map this weekend and figure it all out for sure!

You can do it, Paula! LOL! We're getting there Thursday and leaving Monday. Staying at the Holiday Inn Select. I think John is bringing his kilt. Wooohoooo!

I'm going! I'll be there all 3 days. This is my first year for the conference, though I've been to glass classes at Salem Community College. I'm very excited!

Tink

So how will we recognize one another???? Maybe I'll wear my "got tink?" shirt or something.

jrandrup

Maybe we should wear name tags that say "Hi my name is: JRANDRUP on LE".

I'll be the one screaming everytime I go over a bridge!!

Since we do get name badges, we write "Member of Lampwork Etc" on our badge as a way to identify ourselves. We could also pick a table in the gynasium for lunch and all meet?

That would be fun.

Well, I'll be the one carrying around a case of glass insects to trade for other cool stuff.

Hey Tink! It will be great to see you and John again!! Wesley, looking forward to seeing my ol' buddy and "younger twin"!8)

This conference is a very low key and casual conference. It's small and fun to mingle with all the various artists and characters. Wear your bead work! How better then to be recognized! Don't forget to submit something for display in the special exhibit.

I'm so ready to get out of this cold Chicago weather:-D !

Ofilia

Renee
2007-03-08, 8:38pm
Ofilia, what is the special exhibit?

Okay, forget that question! It's amazing what can be learned from reading (duh!) Well, I'm psyched, and looking forward to meeting everyone there!!!!!

Beast Master

Ofilia is talking about the "Community Exhibit." Everyone can bring a piece of their work to be put on display for the duration of the Conference.

More info here:

As if I'd put any of my work on display in that crowd. It's a humbling experience.

Renee
2007-03-09, 12:04pm
It seems last year was the first time the "Community Exhibit" was held. Does anyone who was there last year know approximately what percentage of attendees submitted work for the exhibit (rough guess)?

I was all enthusiastic about doing this till I read Emily's post. Okay, that was a reality check!

So, is anyone here going to exhibit their work???

Note to self ~ don't knowingly embarrass yourself!

Emily
2007-03-09, 12:23pm
OK, I should say -- I've only gone one year, and they didn't have a Community Exhibit that year. But the quality of the people who demonstrated was awesome. If I were Wesley and Ofilia, I'd go right ahead and display some things, but I'm not. (And I don't know if I'm going to make it this year, anyway -- definitely not for the whole thing, possibly for one day).

I didn't exhibit last year in the Community event.. but this year, I rediscovered (after cleaning out a closet) a little display I made that holds three fish, so I'll bring it with.

There is no reason to be shy! If we don't show what we got, what's the sense of making it?! Be proud.... show us what you made! I can't wait till Friday!!!! Yea, get out-a-town!!! I'm so cabin fevered out:shock: .

Hello!
Looks like I might be able to actually make the conference! I'm looking forward to meeting all of you folks!

I don't have a room reserved yet though. Is anyone seeking a room share by any chance? Holiday Select, as I hear it, is the preferred one.

Hey Tink and John, looks like I'll meet you sooner than July! woohoo!

Hi Virginia, why do you choose the Select over the Express? The Express is actually closer to the school, is a few bucks cheaper, and incudes a continental breakfast with a couple hot things to eat and stuff to grab and go (where the select is a restaurant option only).

Prolly cause that's where all of the cool people stay? That is where the bar and pool are.

Not that I'm cool or anything :-\" I like being able to walk from the hotel. I'm used to walking a lot, so walking a mile before sitting around all day helps me get the fog of sleep out of my brain.

Virginia!!! It's going to be awesome to meet you! Looks like I will know more people there this year than ever before!

Some folks like the Holiday Inn Express because it's closer and quieter. The Holiday Inn Select is... um... the party hotel. Like when I was there a couple of years ago. LOL! I still crack up thinking about it... A "certain someone who shall remain nameless" was partying with all of us in the hotel bar. There was a wedding reception going on in the bar at the same time. This "certain someone" thought it would be a good idea to hit on the bride. ROFL!

I'll be easy to spot: I'm the grrl accompanied by the guy wearing a kilt. LOL! I might even have my "got tink?" shirt on.

I've given up on fixing my email issues before we leave, so I'm just going to bring whatever vessels I have available with me. I'm trying to save up some money for our trip to Europe, so I probably won't be trading. :-(

Ofilia

Hi Tink!
It will be awesome to meet you!! And, I *will* be looking for John and his kilt, for sure (I love a man in a kilt)! And just maybe we should add the kilt to the contract, don't ya think?!

Yeah, like Tink and Wes said... it's the party place! Hey, if I'm going on a road trip... well... !

Hi Ofilia! -- Thanks so much for your recommendations on the Express vs. Select. Being close to the school is convenient. I appreciate everyone's thoughts, as I have not been to either one, and am only going by what I've read on the forum.

At this point (so close to the conference) I'd just like to find a roommate... any ideas folks-?

Hey Paula, if I can entice you to leave your Lauscha order, I'll pick you up on my way down I-95 and we can share a room. What'd think? That way, I can drive, you can close your eyes on the way over the bridge, and all will be good! Think about it, this could work.

nighty-night kiddos, I'll see ya in the morning!

Just an FYI - not on the list but SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper is the Wellesley Inn Penns Grove - I mean its like half the price and not far. I'll still party with anyone, anywhere as long as I can drive back (legally) to my hotel.

Has anyone been to the Sat. night dinner before? What's the dress code?

Open bar or cash bar or what??

And I have a sofa bed in the room so... if you are really hard up for a space...

I'm easy to pick out - I have a black ski boot cast on my left leg - too much running and not enough resting!

I'm not a big fan of the dinner, but if you're asking these questions I'm guessing that you've already paid for it  :-$

Obviously somewhat nice, but don't worry too much about it. You'll see folks in suits/nice dresses or in ripped jeans...

Open bar or cash bar or what??

I seem to recall that it's a cash bar.

When I spoke with Mickey at Salem CC a few weeks ago, I asked her what the meal was like (because I have allergies) and she said "oh, it's not a meal, it's hors d'ouvres and a cash bar.

Paula, next time we're flying. That was just too long a drive. Argh. I hate being trapped in a car for that long. LOL!

Pam, I am SO GLAD we finally got to meet! Great pics, Tracey!

Here is my mini-report:
We got back from the conference late last night. What a wonderful time! I would be hard pressed to say what the best part was, but... Well, here's a short list of some of the best things in no particular order:

Hanging out with Gianni Toso
Hanging out with Barry Lafler
Hanging out with Marcie Davis
Meeting Virginia Slawson
Drinking the grrlie drink that Loren Stump made for me
Finding the PERFECT pair of flameworking glasses
Talking to Milon Townsend about my business
Getting a piece of work from Milon
Friday night at the bar (ALWAYS a high point)
Seeing some old friends
Really feeling like part of the community for the first time ever

The only not-so-good things were the weather and its effects. Because of the weather and other things...:

Fred Birkhill couldn't make it
Shane Fero wasn't there
The Judeman's demo was cancelled
The Friday night stuff was cancelled

We had a totally outstanding time! Gianni Toso is a truly remarkable human being. It was the opportunity to watch him demo and hear him lecture that made me decide I simply HAD TO go this year. It was a rare and priceless opportunity.

I so agree. I was riveted to his every word. It's not often that you you hear someone make so many profound observations in so short a time as was that lecture. His scope of education, his work, his sensitivity -- all awesome. Tink, you are indeed blessed to have had the priceless opportunity to hang out with him afterward.

Tink, it was great meeting you--the Toledo Lunatic Fringe indeed! haha! -- I had a super time, it was so nice to be able to visit with so many, but that said, I missed catching up with so many. It was over all too soon.

The demos were so good. I have some pictures that I'll post. Wes, that picture of you and Gianni--sweet!

Virgina, you are an absolute delight! Of course, now that you've met me, you may decide to invoke the Secret Clause in the teaching contract. ROFL! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! TINK IS COMING!!!!!

We hung out at the hotel bar on Saturday night with Marcie Davis, Steve Sizelove (I adore him!), Loren Stump and his wife (Loren likes grrlie drinks, and made me one. LOL!), Sharon Owens (Inspired Fire) and Gianni Toso.

Gianni was so intelligent and profound... He put into words EXACTLY how I feel about the artform, inspiration and purpose. He was also pricelessly funny. This one (which took place in the bar Saturday night) pretty much made me pee my pants, and I am not kidding. I apologize if my attempt to give the following text an Italian accent offends anyone. It's just kind of essential for setting the scene.

Young Guy: I'd like to take some photos of you guys to document my trip. Is that ok with everyone?

Group: No problem

Gianni Toso: Are you-a gonna use-a the flash?

Young Guy: I don't have to if it would bother you.

Gianni: Well, I'm a Venetian, so please-a don't use the flash.

Young Guy: *stands there looking pretty confused*

Gianni: Hey, if you use-a da flash, you make-a da Venetian blind.

*snork* Ok. So maybe it was the fruity grrlie drink Loren made for me, but that struck me as ridiculously hilarious. ROFL!

Oh, and Gianni said he got these strong vibes from John and me, and that we're perfect spiritual partners :-) And he also said that I work too hard. LOL!

So, where were you when I was looking for you guys that night-? Jeez, evading me, no doubt. Look what fun you had! Hah, I'll remember. LOL. And no, I don't think I'll be invoking the Secret Clause either. You are wild and wacky sweet. Nope. You're not getting out of the contract!

We were in the bar, of course. LOL! Most of the time, anyway. I was up in Marcie's room for a while being interviewed for her Glasscasters program. When the interview gets posted on her site, just remember I was full of Stump JoyJuice at the time :-)

I drank more this weekend than I have the last 25 years combined.

Yes. I desperately need a Human Hamster Ball. LOL! I get pretty wired when I can't work. I start feeling trapped, and end up with a bunch of energy that I can't expend. John and Donna were probably ready to duct tape me and abandon me somewhere Saturday night: I was literally bouncing off the walls.

Because of bad weather and a couple no-show demonstrators, Paul Stankard acted as a fill in. What a delight! He and Loren teamed up at one point (partly because Loren was running an hour or two overtime!)

62834

62832

Paul asked Michelle in the audience to finish his Rose of Sharon marble, which was being auctioned off as he made it ($675.) Quite a bit of pressure for someone who admitted she'd never worked in soft glass before. She did a great job!

62835

Pam Dugger did a beautiful job and made us mandrel-wound glass artists proud to be represented at the conference.

Nice photos, Val!

Steve Sizelove is such a nice guy. I remember being in a Lucio Bubacco class with him a few years ago... His female figures were about the same as mine at that time. See what happens when you practice, practice, practice??? LOL!

Hey Tink, I wanted to meet you at the conference, but somehow didn't get a round to it #-o I DO remember seeing a guy in a kilt at one point, but just didn't put 2 + 2 together... Maybe some other time.

:waving:

the conference was cool, as it always is. loren was great, steve sizelove was AMAZING. we actually got to have a little private class with him as the glass art club and it was fantastic. he just blew glass for seven hours as we all asked questions and harassed him..and he answered and harassed back. he just seemed like a real person, talking about all the things we talk about in school all the time..opinions on pipemaking..etc. his work is awesome, i love it.

the wheaton demo was interesting.

tink it was so awesome and such a surprise to see you because i hadn't seen this thread prior to the conference and i was sitting with my friends at the preconference seminar and i was like OMG THATS JOHN! ... OMG THATS TINK!! i thought it was really cool to see beadmakers there.

oh and i scored a "friends don't let friends wig wag" shirt.. so it was a good weekend.

i'm kinda bummed i didn't get to meet some of the friends on this thread.. i'm sure i probably saw you but didn't get a chance to say hi. sorry. :(

now the school is back to normal..and we can't wait until next year! :)

sorry, but one of the pictures is mislabeled. the picture with the red vessel, figure, white floral goblet, and murrini vase is not student work. thats the visiting artist case..i wish we were that good!!

the next picture is of a silvered vase and a ? goblet my friend ian made and a piece of glass my friend michelle coldworked. its fantastic to hold in your hands. and the next picture is of goblets made by my friend steve. and the bacon and eggs goblet is from my friend jason. he is the man.

I have fixed the photo album. I wish the pieces in the Glass Center were better labeled. Some of the shelves were so high that I couldn't make out the names. Had to stand on my tip-toes just to get some of the pictures. Believe me, the pieces are VERY GOOD.
