Has anyone got any pics of beads made with copper ruby frit?
ive just got some and not sure about it or how to work it
thanks guys!
I don't have any pics, but I have a note that say "work thin" and this:
Copper Ruby
This is a 'Kiln Strike' color. It may be clear as you're working it,
but the color (not too dark) will strike in the kiln to a ruby red.
Hold at 965 at least 1 hour (beads). Reacts to silver. A bit fussy
but a superior Copper Ruby if you learn to use it.

I love it on Silver foil esp with coral.
Ha well ive never used silver foil before either!
But they are great beads, any tips on using the foil ;)?
Allison Turner of WhiteRaven Creations uses copper ruby frit in gorgeous ways.
I miss her posts.
I haven't checked her website out in a while, but I'm sure she has pictures of it there. She uses it over silver alot, then encases it. I particularly remember a set of peacock beads...simply divine.
She gave me the recipe and I tried and tried to copy them but I never succeeded. Mine sucked...hers were glorious.

I just tried to access her site, but it is gone. Maybe she changed domains.
But I did find the 'peacock' beads in her glassartists.org gallery. Here is the LINK (http://www.glassartists.org/Img23303__Img23303_Peacocks.jpg.asp).
The background is copper ruby and other stuff. She was always very generous with her knowledge, you might want to email her for some tips.
Pretty sure THIS (http://www.glassartists.org/Img17132__Img17132_JungleLove.jpg.asp)set has it too.
Check out these babies. POW! (http://www.glassartists.org/Img16494__Img16494_WildDenim2.jpg.asp)
I gotta quit. I could post dozens of links to Allison's copper ruby fritted beads.
Check out her whole gallery if you have time. I must be feeling nostalgic!

Sorry, but I gotta post just one more. BAM! (http://www.glassartists.org/Img43201__Img43201_0124DragonsNest.jpg.asp)
I had never seen those!
OMG they are fantastic!!
if only....... ((sighs)) lol
From looking at the WC thread, it seems that there's the Gaffer Copper Ruby, which is a non-reducing color that requires kiln striking, and Copper Ruby made by Kugler and by Reichenbach. Do we know which one we're talking about? Reduction (either Kugler or Reichenbach) or Gaffer?
The Copper Ruby reduction glass (I've got some from Arrow Springs -- it isn't labeled, but I think most of their reduction frits are Kugler) is one of the trickier reduction frits to use. I think I had some success with it years ago, but I haven't played with it for ages and can't really remember what I did. I know it wanted to be treated differently. I do remember that Deanna Griffin Dove did a presentation on reduction frits at one of the Gatherings and said that copper ruby was the only color that she didn't use her "dragon's breath" flame for. (Of course, I can't remember what sort of flame she said she did use.)
Edit:I just checked, and the copper ruby frit that Phoenix (Jessica) sells is Reichenbach, but it's the light copper ruby from Reichenbach, which doesn't reduce. So, basically, we've got three types of copper ruby:
(1) Gaffer, which doesn't reduce and needs to be kiln-struck -- it's discussed in the WC thread;
(2) Reichenbach light copper ruby, which doesn't reduce -- pictures of this color are on Jessica/Phoenix's site;
(3) Reichenbach (regular) copper ruby and Kugler copper ruby, which do reduce to a metallic dark copper ruby (but are tricky).
I have the Gaffer one :-\"

Ali's still selling on da'bay...you can contact her via one of her auctions...I snagged up one of her beads a few months ago (she posts inexpensive focals from time to time & I love them for necklaces when I have spare $). She's a sweetie & the one who introduced me to forums (ack, yes, it's all Ali's fault!)

Mary, thanks for the links to Allison's beads. Her beads are Stunning! I've wondered what color frit that was. I thought it was black but it does look like a dark deep red.
I also couldn't access her White Raven site, but here's her eBay site http://stores.ebay.com/White-Raven-Creations which has a couple of other links.
I sent her an email with this thread's url.

Here's two, using Val's Gaffer variety of Copper Ruby. It's a lovely garnet but needs to be used sparingly or it gets very dark & dense. The first bead is 3 frit layers over a sandwich of Gaffer pink, silver foil and clear. The second set is 2 layers over pale pink Gaffer cane.

BOO!
Hi Mary, Hi Lyn, Hi everybody!!!!
Thanks for all the kind words!
Thanx for the email Lyn, I would have never known otherwise that I was being talked about. I don't post anywhere much anymore. Always get the sound of crickets so I stopped.
Copper Ruby is my all time favorite frit. I use it in powder and regular frit form a lot!! In order to get that ghostly white ring around the frit you must put it on top of silver!!! Then encase it for POW!!! Personally I have NO clue who makes the frit I get. No one ever puts that down on the lable anymore. But I do get it mostly from Bill Thorton on ebay (which is Frantz). I'm way to lazy right now to go find out so there ya go. I THINK it's Reichenbach. I have the light ruby here too but don't like it as much. It does have more of a red color to it. The powder is my favorite out of them all. I can pile goodies on top for all kinds of effects.
Hey if anyone ever wants to know how I made something just let me know.
whiteraveness@yahoo.com
I'm one of the few out there that still give up secrets.
I don't make a lot of those kinds of beads as much anymore because sales are sooo bad and it's just not worth the time and effort. I have a few up right now on ebay and they are just sitting there so I give up.
](*,)
The web site is down right now for revamping. I guess I could put it up now but it's not quite finished and I am crazy here with other stuff to do all the time. Lemmie see what I can do. It's pretty big though.
ok, off to take another look at it and see what I can add to it. I do have an encasement tuturial on there.

Hey Allison.
Good to see you around! I have a set that I got from you a long time ago and still love them. I've wondered where you've been and what you've been doing!
Hi Allison!
It is great to 'see' ya again!
This thread did make me think of you quite a bit over the last couple of days. I knew you were still active on eBay, but I didn't know you had a glassartists.org gallery til I went searching for pix.
I have to thank you big time. When you shared the tips on making those peacock beads (which I never did make as beautiful as yours), you turned me on to a whole new world of glass...encased stringers.
I was still pretty new at the time and your encased stringer recipes lit a fire under me that never went out. I experimented for weeks just on color combinations alone. Played and played with it. Totally changed the look of my own beads for a very long time.
So, even though I'm sure I thanked you years ago for the peacock recipes...I know I didn't thank you for the even more important lesson. Encased stringers. It sounds simple, but what a difference they can make.
Anyway, GREAT to read a post from you. You've certainly been missed. I hope this thread is a testimony to how timeless your work is, and how good you are with that copper ruby frit!

The first person that came to my mind when I started reading this thread was Allison!! :D
There's another thread here http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119760&highlight=hollow+beads that you all might find interesting...I know I have read it over and over again. Allison has been very kind and helpful to me in the past (THANK YOU ALLISON!!) and as you can see, makes incredible beads!!! :D :D
I am lucky enough to be the proud owner of this set...

They are my favorites EVER of all the beads I have ever purchased.
When I snap back to soft glass mode I definitely will be revisiting this technique - THANKS!!
