Hey, I got lb. of raku rod yesterday from OCR that has incredible color. Makes me think it's not always the same, sort of like opal yellow or something.

So,you people who have tried it and not had much luck might want to try a different batch.

I will post some pictures later, but when I put it in the kiln last night I had some unbelievable color.

I have found this to be true....varies from batch to batch.

Can't wait to see the pictures! :)

Yep, like a lot of color changing glass, it varies from batch to batch. ;)

I believe your right. It was something several of us noticed from the beginning. At least it's been my experience.

Yes, this is very true. I bought an awesome batch from Val when it 1st came out (remember raku jitterbug). Since then it's been hit and miss.

I want to see some pictures please :)

I have some Raku Jitterbug....didn't know I was sitting on a treasure.

I just used some dark raku that I got from Squid and it turned and amazing stoned washed denim on a black bead......I"M IN LOVE WITH THIS FRIT

The dark raku is iris brown. It does some cool things, but it can also turn white if you aren't careful.

Yes, it's definitely different from batch to batch. You'll get the best variation if you mix batches, or if you're pulling stringer or twistie -- look for 2 rods that look different. If you can mix the greenish with the more brownish, you'll get more colors.

Isn't is the bomb???? I love the look I get from cane too!

If it turns white on you, just reheat it again and blow on it - the white will disappear :)

I didn't know that Squidly.

I took 42 picture and when I looked at them in photoshop they had white crap on them, but here you can at least see the color.

Wow. Double and Triple Wow, actually! Those are the most beautiful beads, Kevan!
Brilliant job, I don't know which is more impressive, getting the raku to pop like that or the beauty of the beads, they are really intriguing and beguiling.

You've inspired me to give raku another go. Thanks, mate!

Thanks!

I have also noticed that Raku doesn't react the same on all glass. It pretty much sucks on light blues.

Yup, you sure got a great batch! But then, you are truly the raku queen and I do believe you can make it do anything! What I would do for those colors!

That's kind, but I'm not the queen.

what is really frustrating is that i can't get the Raku to do anything here in my studio.
YET! I go to Victoria to take a class and the Raku popped all kinds of colors no problem, doing the exact same thing. So why can't I get it to work here at home?

Not enough oxygen? or could it be the salt in the air? Who knows? I whish i knew!

Those are very pretty - I haven't tried getting color from a twistie yet. I am still trying to master frit.

I actually get better color from raku if I make a twistie. I think it has something to do with the heating and cooling making the cane and then reheating to apply to the bead?? Try it!

The real name of Raku is Reichenbach Iris Orange ( R-108 ) and you can purchase them from Olympic Color Rods (http://www.glasscolor.com/). Just make sure you buy the CANE and not the rods. Rods from Olympic are for glassblowing and they are like 1-1/2 inches thick!

Dark Raku is Reichenbach Dark Brown ( R-106 ).

I purchased some raku chunks from Robin of Glass Diversions a couple of weeks ago because I was getting low. I tried them out last week and achieved some really sweet colors from it. Here is the link to Robins site, www.glassdiversions.com I have raku rods that I don't like to much (they don't produce the nice blues and greens). I have a theroy that if you buy the chucks made from larger size rods you achieve more color.

Interesting Dawn.

I just used some raku from diff batches and noticed that yes the color variation is present. One batch I mainly got blues with a hint of green. Another batch I got blues, greens and purples. Another batch I got muddy greens with only a hint of blue. All done on a black base encased with clear.

I am using frit.

I have rod sitting in my cabinet but have noticed that every rod I have is a diff color. On the outside and inside rings. Have yet to use them but would like to know what the rods Kevan got that were "killer" looked like.

I am on a Betta with 1 oxycon. I am going to see if using both oxycons will make a diff in the colors I get.

I think the frit size 4 at OCR is pretty big. Not on sale it is $17.15 a lb (with a half kilo or 1.1 lbs being your minimum order). It is at least triple that buying it from most of the frit suppliers. I know 1 lb is a lot of frit, but you can usually sell excess in the garage sale area if you have more than you want :)

I have discovered that if I get the muddy green with a little blue that I have to heat it again to get a good "strike". It's almost like the muddy green is a stage it has to go through to get to the darker blues and purples. Took me a good while to figure this out, but now I can get the colors I want - finally!
