This tutorial was designed to be a one page, quick glance type of thing. It is available as a PDF file (http://home.earthlink.net/~marymichelles/RoseBeadTutorial.pdf). This will be easier to use when working, although the pictures below are bigger, and I had a bit more space to write.

Materials List:
Mandrel dipped in bead release
Base color of your choice
Vine cane
Clear glass stringer
Clear rod
Opaque White Stringer
Transparent Color Stringer
Stamen Cane
Marvering tool (I use a Stump Shaper)

HINTS:
1. Work with a small flame.
2. When adding transparent colored dots add them within the edges of the previous opaque dot.
3. When I say "melt in slightly", your goal is to melt only enough to smooth any sharp transitions. This is to avoid bubbles being trapped as you add clear.
4. When covering each layer of petals with glass, you just cover the petals completely and only. When you melt to round this helps with the spread of the petals.

Below making an embedded Rose Bead is broken into 24 steps.
67535
STEP 1: Place small footprint of glass on mandrel
67536
STEP 2: Marver glass footprint to a barrel shape, measuring about .25 to .375 inch wide.
67537
STEP 3: Add Vine Cane to barrel.
67538
STEP 4: Melt to round.
67539
STEP 5: Encase vine with clear.
67540
STEP 6: Melt to round.
67541
STEP 7: Add three groups of three opaque white dots for the first layer of petals for three seperate blossoms.
67542
STEP 8: Melt to round.
67543
STEP 9: Add dots of transparent color to each petal. Place dot within the opaque white. Melt to Round.
67544
STEP 10: Add clear glass on the top of each group of petals. Melting very slightly to avoid bubbles. Melt to round.
67545
STEP 11: Add a second group of petals, on top of and in between each each of the first set of petals.
675466754767548
STEPS 12 through 14: Repeat steps 8 through 10
8. Melt to Round. 9. Add dots of transparent color to each petal. Melt to round. 10. Add clear glass to the top of each group of petals, melting slightly to avoid bubbles. Melt to round.
67549
STEP 15: Add a third group of petals, on top of and in between each of the second sets of petals.
675506755167552
STEP 16 through 18: Repeat steps 8 through 10.
8. Melt to Round. 9. Add dots of transparent color to each petal. Melt to round. 10. Add clear glass to the top of each group of petals, melting slightly to avoid bubbles. Melt to round.
67553
STEP 19: Spot heat and plunge the center of each grouping of petals with stringer or stamen cane.
67554
STEP 20: Melt a small amount of clear stringer and carefully fill the hole made by plunging. Melt in very slightly.
67555
STEP 21: Add clear glass covering the top of each blossom. Melt in slightly as you go. This is to avoid bubbles.
67556
STEP 22: Melt to round
67557
STEP 23: Carefully encase the entire bead. Melting slightly as you go.
67558
STEP 24: Melt to round.

WONDERFUL tutorial, Michelle! The photographs are incredible and your beads are always stunning. I had always wondered what your encasing steps were - there are so many different ways to do it and your way is so precise and unique. What isn't covered by the steps is the masterful heat control necessary to melt everything smooth and encase neatly while maintaining that perfect shape. That takes PPP! You're a huge inspiration to me and to many other floral artists and future floral artists. :)

Thank you again this wonderful tutorial Michelle.

Here's my first one and I learned a lot from it. I'm used to working more with Bullseye and this was made with Moretti/Vetrofond because I wanted orange flowers and this is the Aranicio Perfecto. I forgot how soft 104 is :)

Next one I make I will use a smaller flame, work cooler (I think that's a scorch mark you see) and clear stringers, and smaller dots (I forgot you listed clear stringer and was going from memory) and I used the whole rod so I only got two layers of petals, but I like it :)

Here's my first attempt, less than perfect so I've put it on the end of my watch clasp as a personal reminder that I want to work on this technique. I used Moretti clear stringer, which proved to be easy to use but too cloudy, so next time I'll try Lauscha.

YES.................This Thread should live FOREVER!!!! Keep it alive, please!!!! I've been trying to use this tut - not quite as successfully as I'd hoped. Working on a Hot Head, you don't have much ability to turn down or "fine point" the flame. I wish I lived near Yunita - she does wonderful Floral and Rose Beads on a HH!!!! She's given tips in the "Shaping Flower Petals" thread, but if I could just SEE her do it...wish I could get her to post a YouTube!!!! I still appreciate everyone's effort...

Thanks again!

Michelle, I just read this thread. Thank you for this tut, and all of the pictures that go along with it. I'm self taught and learned everything online so what you did is greatly appreciated.

Now I have a question. When you add all of the petal dots and melt them in, the bead is no longer round. So, do you just keep heating until the bead is round? Or do you leave it with the bumps from the melted in petals? Or do you add more (extra) clear glass in the area in-between the places where the petals are???

Hopefully that makes sense. When I try to make my beads round after adding a lot of stuff in some areas, the petals get all messed up and distorted.

bousky
2008-01-11, 11:03am
I Melt to round. Although some people don't since it can be time consuming. Sometimes I add a little glass after melting to round if the bead is uneven.

I hope that makes sense!
