Hi everyone,
Hoping someone can help before I throw my computer through a window. :x
I'm using dreamweaver 2004 to try and get a web site together. I have the home page with all the buttons and several other documents completed that the buttons have to link to. Now this is where I'm getting stuck.
I'm trying to figure out if I'm linking everything properly.
Is there any way to test the links before uploading onto the WWW ?
Or does it all get tested once it's been put out there ?
Thanks in advance.
cheers
Sally
(totally confused and ready to scream)
There is. Click F12 ( I think). It's I belive called Preview. It will ask you to save it first. It defaults to IE. I don't have installed on this computer so I am doing this by memory.

In addition to hitting f12 and manually testing the links, you can also can have Dreamweaver do the checking for you. I have Dreamweaver MX... under the "site" menu in the site files window, choose "Check Links Sitewide"... it will give a window with 3 tabs... one shows broken links, one shows orphaned files, and one shows external links. Not sure exactly where this is located in DW 2004, just search for "check links sitewide"....
hope that helps

If all else fails.... just drag your html document right into a browser window.

Thanks so much for the responses.
It appears that I'm a little worse off than I thought. Hit F12 and everything's ok except my lovely little buttons aren't even there. :(
Something's gone wrong somewhere so it's back to the drawing board I think.
Thanks again for your help.

The biggest problem I had with that program was that I would assign links, and then after uploading they would not work! Finally I realized that when you bring up the blank document to build your page, before doing anything, SAVE the page as "index" or "whatever". Otherwise the links won't work. What's confusing, is that sometimes they would work and sometimes they wouldn't.

Hi everyone, :waving:
Thanks again for your help with previous question.
I started from scratch, got rid of the buttons (they were giving me a headache) LOL.
I now have the home page exactly how I would like it (just have to insert a few images).
I was wondering if someone could answer a question for me though, when I go into preview it opens up in a smaller window. This in itself would be ok but it's changing the text layout so that it's a really small band of text down the centre of the page. When I maximise the window all goes back to normal. I know it's probably something I've set incorrectly but does anyone have any idea what that might be?
I'd really like the text to look normal in both windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting desperate to just get this thing out there.
Oh, 1 more thing please ?
I'm just about to start taking photos of my stuff to be inserted onto the pages, is there a preferred size for pics taken specifically for the web?
Many thanks.
cheers

Ok, problem solved. Just had to remove a couple of big chunks of code that shouldn't have been put in. OOPS !

Hi Sally - I am fairly confortable with Dreamweaver and in the same timezone as you, so send me a pm if you're still having problems and I can help you (i'll send you my email day).
Images should be 72 dpi (its a waste going any higher res than that for web viewing, and it helps protect your images) and then just physically whetver size you wnat them....mine on my page are about 8cm wide I think, from memory....

Thanks Suz,
Although you may end up being very sorry you offered. LOL. :-D
I'm slowly getting the hang of it. Just every now and then something weird happens and I can't figure out what I've done to cause it.
Hopefully it will all be up and running before xmas.
cheers
