I forgot and don't know how to figure it out. Will my knitting needle guage work? What do you use to measure the size of your mandrels?

You *need* dial calipers. They are just too handy not to have. They are cheap, like $10 from harbor freight. You may want to splurge for the digital ones. They are easier to read and will display in millimeters or inches.

You can get them from your hardware store, but you will pay a premium.

yup - harbor freight is awesome. Sign up to receive weekly specials via email and you will get great coupons sent to you. I got the digital calipers on one such coupon.
