Hello everyone. I am so new to this that I "squeek"!

Anyway - when I go to get supplies for the first time (in process of getting a place and things together), is there a better glass for a beginner? This may sound stupid, but I have heard about Moretti, Lauscha, Bullseye - I am a bit confused on the properties, quality, ease of working, etc. on the different brands.

Do you have suggestions on what a beginner should begin with? How many rods (how many beads from one rod if I were making 1 color beads to play and learn with), etc.

Is it better to buy long rods and cut into smaller pieces?

As you can see, I am very new... \\:D/
Thanks a bunch!

Gail, I'm just a newbie too, but anyway, I bought a Moretti sampler pack for my first glass... I liked it because I got to see how differently the various colors handle - some are "drippier" than others, some are relatively stiff.... personally, i think it gives a good basis to know what to buy more of in the future..

but that's just one newbie's opinion, for what its worth.

Hi Gail,
Welcome to the 'wonderful world of lampwork'!! I got my beginner kit from Arrow Springs. Moretti (soft glass) and mandrels, kiln, tools, all you need to get started and they are very helpful with any questions.

Gail, my torch is a hot head, and I use the one lb canisters of mapp gas... its a great way to start since it's relatively inexpensive, but it does have its limitations unless you use bulk fuel... those little canisters freeze up regularly and its difficult if not impossible to work for any longer than an hour or hour and 1/2 at one sitting. But if you are like me who tends to pick up and drop hobbies at the speed of light, don't spend a lot of money until you are sure you will continue....

it only took me a few days (and getting that dreaded first burn over with) to realize I'm not giving up *this* hobby.... EVER!!!
