I posted some S&T last night and WOW....have had so many PM's about who this glass company is (and since LE is more forgiving than WC) I thought I would post it in an open forum. Hope I don't get pulled...
www.pi-glass.com

Elisha will take your order. They have a sample pack with many more colors than their website shows. And their service was lightning fast! I ordered and had my glass in hand the next day!!

96 COE and their colors are like none I have seen elsewhere. A little stiff to work so there will be a learning curve. But it is more forgiving than 104. Not as shocky.

Maybe I should post this in the technical forum also... hmm....

I don't know these guys, not related in anyway, but just want to share a great glass find to all my lampworking friends...

Oooooooh - - - Bengal, Butternut and Transylvania are delicious :) Oh and Persimmon!!

Question since I can't find it - - -can I stick 96 COE in my kiln at the same temperature that I do w/ moretti?? I think my kiln is set at 960.

Nice! I like the greens especially, and the blackberry. I'll definitely look into this when they start to widen their palette. Love the website!

I have always used the same annealing schedule but maybe someone else could chime in here with more technical info.....

Yea, I noticed they were low on the pinks...but I'm a blue-aholic and Fossil speaks to me.

I bought a sample pack at the Gathering... I have not used it yet.
The company is based in Seattle but the glass is made in China.
The fact that it is manufactured in China makes me not very interested in using it...

Brad Pierson has done color testing for them.

Here are other threads on pi-glass:

The glass is Spectrum's System 96 rods...made by Uroborus. You can buy it from most glass retailers.

I would be very interested to know where you obtained this information. I will be asking Pi glass directly when I go vist them next week. Also, for future reference, the correct spelling is "Uroboros". Only one "u".

I bought a sample pack at the Gathering also! I've made 2 spacers so far and they did fine with annealing at 960 degrees. They told me that it would do fine at that temp! I also talked to them about getting more pinks and purples and they are working on it!!

OK, so as a newbie I am really confused. Should we be buying glass that is only made in Italy or here? If something is made in China is it automatically bad? What's the scoop on Pi...their website is great, and the colors seem really good too (I'm a blue fanantic). Do companies like Jodel and Howaco distribute Chinese made glass? Should I care? So many questions.....

Kendra, I have issues with China, that is why I do not think I will be buying any more of this glass...
I do own things made in China, unfortunately sometimes there is not a choice like with Lark Books.
If there is a choice on where to spend my money, and with glass there is, I will choose to spend my money elsewhere.
This is my personal choice, nothing more...

Fair enough...I just wasn't sure if there were other issues that I wasn't aware of...like Chinese glass technical problems or whatever. I had no idea that ANY glass rods were made in China, thought they were all European made. Shows me what I (think I) know. Thanks.

Sometimes it's good to just plain buy American, or as local as you can. I'm a big proponent of local buying, less trucks, less planes, less gas, less environmental impact, all while supporting the American worker. So that could be another reason, beyond the issues specifically located in China.

So Kendra, my point is, for some I guess it might be lifestyle/philosophy thing, for others, how they do biz and what they pay, etc. in China. And beyond. =)

For some people the human rights abuses, child labor, total government control thing factors in as well.

RIGHT...I totally understand what you are Lunesse are saying. I guess what was confusing me is that I THOUGHT I was buying european glass and maybe I had been buying Chinese glass. I was hoping to get a better understanding of where the distributors (Frantz, Jodel, Howaco, etc.) get the glass. Had NO CLUE that China was a potential supplier. I really want to be able to say that the glass is Czech or Italian made or whatever with a clear conscience.

I think that Kinari glass (similar to Satake) is manufactured in China, largely for Japanese consumption...

To the best of my knowledge (but I've been wrong before) the Vetrofond and Moretti/Effetre are Italian. Lauscha is German. Czech glass is (I'll never be able to spell this) Czechlovician (you get the point I hope). Satake is Japanese. Uroboros, Wasser, Spectrum and Bullseye are American.

There was a thread a while ago at WC about glass brands. I don't recall it mentioning where it all comes from. To the best of my knowledge all these companies make their own glass. So any glass from Frantz, JoDel, Colored Sands, Howaco, etc labelled Lauscha (for example) is German. So if one of these companies starts selling the PI glass and if it is Chinese then they will carry Chinese glass. I'm not aware that anything they carry now is.

Does that help?

When I started lampworking I was warned on WC! against using something called PIG-sticks or something like that. It was, if I understood correctly, a really nasty type of Chinese glass. Cheap, though. Anyone remember that?

Are we sure this is not the same stuff? The names are so close...

cghipp
2005-10-14, 7:54am
Kiki, I keep thinking of that when I see the name, too. But the PI glass is nothing like the PIG sticks, based on what I've heard about those. I think "PIG" stood for "Priceless International Glass."

Oh gods, I remember PIG sticks! What horrible stuff that was. Some of the colors were really lovely (I still pine for Moonstone) but it had major compatibility issues, a lot of it was shocky as hell, and it all looked like it was packed in camel dung. Blech! I think it was from India. It was the most frustrating stuff I've ever used.

I twitched when I saw PI Glass, but realized very quickly that it's not the same stuff. Whew! Now, to sell some beads so I can buy some to try out!

I just received this email from PI Glass Co. in regards to who makes it:

And I quote

"No, it's not true. We are compatible with 96 COE glass. We are a new company
with a new formula. Pi Glass is not affiliated with Uroboros.
The glass IS made in China. I'm sorry I wasn't clear on that. We
have a partner living there, working directly with the factory. She has been
developing the product for the last 2 years and is very involved there. In
fact, one of the great things about that is we can develop custom colors and
be a part of the development from start to finish."

I received a phone call from a dear friend who is a glass chemist highly recommending these people for their product. And I didn't even ask about them. She saw I was trying their glass and thought she would call me and give me some inside information about the owner. And it was all good. I was elated to here about it.

Hope this clarifies things on where this glass is produced.... and please don't start any wars here. It is your choice to try this glass or not and your decision is totally respected.

And thanks to Ron Bearer for the kudos he sent about this company...

Jamn!

All of those cool Kugler/furnace glass frits that you have been using and observing the 15/85 percent rule with can go out the window with
PI glass. The COE 96, as I understand it, gets you that much closer to your frit and base glass being compatable! I haven't worked with the PI glass yet, but, my sources tell me that you can get colors not available in the Italian palette, the glass is not shocky, and not prone to boiling, and is a dream to work. Who knows, My COE 104 is getting closer to going by the wayside. I fuse too, so, If I could evertything COE 96, I'd be a happy camper!

I intend on trying it, and hoping for the best!
