I spent some time last night making transparent red lauscha beads, making sure they were struck.. they were almost black, but if i looked in the light, they were gorgeous transparent red....
this morning, they were orangy, unstruck....SO FRUSTRATED.
Is there a way to know for SURE when you've struck a bead enough? If you've struck it enough before going in the kiln, why in the world would it unstrike? is it a kiln thing?
kiln too high? lighting off in the studio? i haven'y used lauscha reds, but with effetre striking reds i find it's asy, all they need is a good through heating through... nothing over done. you can over strike i think. try less heat maybe????
hope this might have been helpful....

ahh. okay.
For those of you who want to know, that tutorial told me I wasn't letting it cool off enough before striking. Apparently I should be LESS careful at keeping it warm. ;)

You also need to heat the crap out of it first. If you don't do that you get hazy/milky glass instead of a pure transparent.

Is that true for Effetre striking red as well?

Hmmmm...do you think that could be my problem with the freakin, frackin, ugly as sin, bordello beads I've made?

I'll bet that's the case.
I have a bordello rod I gave up on because of my striking problems. I'm going to try it again soon.

Yep! The Bordello instantly reminded me of this odd lot of Lauscha a got years ago that I just loved. I had to work it the same way as Lauscha red since it was really on odd lot of it. Bordello is identical in every way to that odd Lauscha red. If I didn't have them separated I wouldn't know the difference. Try using those tips on the Bordello and see what you get.
