Why does a HH get all dragon breathey every now and then with straight propane, but a o2/propane mix (on say a lynx)does not???
I would think that because it is a surface mix this would not prevent stuff from comming through the hoses..... OR does this actually happen, but we dont hear it so much....

I really was just wondering about this torching today... just popped into my head..... 8) #-o#-o#-o

What do you mean by "dragon breathey?" What's it doing?

if you dont clear the line out after a session, the next time you fire it up, it does the "dragon breath"....
fire it up and get a normal flame, two seconds later flame doubles in size... pretty wild the first few times it happens...

This article is probably best explanation about what is cause for "dragon breath"...

http://www.artglassanswers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=219

There has been other theories as "dirty propane" but it does not prove out, and some have blamed the ethyl mercaptan, the odorant in propane, but there is only 1 pound of ethyl mercaptan per 10,000 gallons (or 42,500 pounds) of propane, so that does not satisfactory explain "dragon breath".

I don't have a big problem with this and handle it well, however while taking care of this nussance i wondered.... does this happen in other torches? or is it a HH thing.... AND if it does not happen in other torches, such as minor, mini cc lynx etc., why???? it's all propane? right?

Dale thanks for the link. It has been a wealh of knowledge for me in the past and the welding shop guys finally realized what i was talking about!!! lol

A primary difference between the HH and other torches mentioned is that the HH runs on tank pressure - whereas all the others have a regulator in place reducing the pressure to the torch.
