I just bought some yummy colors of frit that are 96 COE. It's my understanding that I can use this frit on Effetre as long as I follow the 5% rule and don't layer it. I've never used frit before, so I would be grateful for any tips on how to use and apply frit. Are there any special considerations I need to take into effect? If anyone would care to elaborate on the 5% rule, that would be great. Now that my purchase buzz has worn off, I'm thinking 5% doesn't sound like much, and am wondering what kind of effect it will have on the bead.
Thanks!
Amber
There's no such thing as a 5% rule. 96 COE is incompatible with 104, BUT due to the lead or other metal content in the glass (someone correct me if I'm wrong here), the glasses can often work together in small amounts. The actual amount is subject to trial and error for each particular glass combination. In general, the smaller the amount the better.

Yep Courtney's right. I use frit with Moretti all the time and have only had a couple of beads crack. I use them in moderation with incompatible COEs but you have to be especially careful with yellows and oranges as I've found ;) .

Lead? Yikes. Are there any extra safety precautions that I need to take when using frit?
Thanks,
Amber
You need to have good ventilation. I would upen the jars and use them under your vent hood (as opposed to off to the side somewhere.) Don't put your fingers up to your eyes or mouth until you've washed your hands. The more fine the frit, the more important these precautions are.
