View Full Interactive Version Of This Page : Need help with replacing relay in ChiliPepper
I'm trying to replace the relay in my poor sick ChiliPepper.
Here are the instructions I have and where I'm stuck:
1. Turn kiln off and unplug - got that one
2. Remove 4 tek screws holding panel box (orange) to kiln with 1/4" nut driver or socket. Hmmmmm ....
The controller box on the side of my kiln is green. The panel with the three buttons on the front of the box is red. I have NO orange! Am I suppose to take the green box off the side of the kiln, or the red panel off the front of the green box????
If you have done this before, can you help me? I'm going into withdrawal, I haven't torched in 2 weeks because of broken kiln and pre-Christmas ski trip. Please - I want to torch!
My controller box is orange and it is supposed to have the same controller as a chili pepper - I have a jen ken with an orton controller, so it sounds like you should remove the controller box.
Thanks Squid! Looking at the instructions again, there isn't anything that says these instructions are for a Chili Pepper. So I'll guess they apply to other Jen Ken kilns and that's where the orange comes from. I'll try taking off the green box :)
OK ... got the relay changed and the kiln is starting to warm up again!! This is progress!
ETA: 940 and holding!! I see a full day of torching tomorrow!!

Yay! You're back in business!
Judi, I have to replace the relay in my Chili Pepper just about every 8 months! I'm on my 5th relay now. For as little as they cost, I always have an extra one on hand. I just consider it a "wear item" and wouldn't part with my Chili Pepper for the world! I love that little kiln!
Thanks guys! It's good to be back in business! I love my Chili Pepper too!! I now have an extra relay and an extra heating element on hand for the next time. I was really kicking myself when the relay went out because I had it on my "to do" list to order an extra, but hadn't done it yet.

Help needed here too....
The instruction book on "skipstep" isn't very clear. I understand and can do the hit the middle button and it will display "skst."
Then what? Janie (who has one) says you hit the left button... K, did that and all it says is "something" and "idle." Flashes back between the two. I would expect it to display temp and time remaining since the step I want to skip to is the holding cycle.
Does anyone know?
Thanks, in advance.
Sue
On mine you just hit the middle button twice to skip to the next step. First time it shows "skst", after the second time the display does the usual flashing back and forth between the time and temp (it might show something else for a moment before it starts flashing between time & temp, can't remember). I know some people have to hit the left button as well, but on mine it's just the middle button twice. If I hit the left button it goes to idle and I have to re-start the program. I have an Orton controller.

Judi,
Thanks! I'll try hitting the middle button twice. Cross your fingers for me!

I have to say, the guy I talked to at Jen Ken couldn't have been more informative and helpful. Call them the next time you need help, you'll be very happy.
Yes, the folks at Jen Ken were very helpful when I ordered the replacement parts. I would have called them about my installation question, but it was Christmas Day and I didn't want to wait. I knew someone here would be able to help me. That's one of the many things I love about LE :)
