Here's how I make my encased triangle beads!

I used periwinkle, transparent dark purple and clear.

99498
99499
99500
99501

finished bead!
99502

Some tips…

Start with a *small* base. These beads can get big without you realizing it! Remember, you’ll be thickly encasing it when you’re all done.

Keep your dots along the side edge of the bead, but not too close to the hole.

Always melt down the previous row completely before applying more glass.

To add depth, use twice as much transparent glass as opaque. This doesn’t mean make your transparent dots twice as big, however. Just add another row on top of the previous row. Like this:

Be creative and have fun!

Another thing I didn't mention because I thought it was obvious, I guess, is that you can follow these same steps to make regular triangle beads.

99498 + 99565 = 99566

First 3 steps, plus heavy encasing will make regular triangle beads. The only aspect that I would do differently is that I'd make the dots bigger so that they'd stretch from hole to hole after encasing.

When I do my encasing on a triangle bead or a striped bead, I keep getting a really good end on my right side and my left side seems to not get the encasing and the base color "leaks" out. What am I doing wrong?

Also I always seem to have one side that has more clear than the other, any way to fix that?

I had taken a break from these for awhile because I kept doing the same things! I now try to do at least one at torch time! Just tried again last night and same thing happened, It was a white bead with red and blue stripes. Started with a white disk, then added blue and red dots, melted them down a bit and then added the clear. The right looks wonderful, but the left end, while it has a good pucker, has the white showing instead of the clear over it. Any help would be wonderful for this newbie!

Thanks a bunch for the great tutorial!

This is something that almost all bead makers must contend with. Most people are more dominant on one side of the body than the other. My guess is that you’re right-handed. Without realizing it, you’re applying slightly more glass and heat to the right side of your bead. This is natural for a right-handed person. It’s just going to take a bit more awareness on your part to treat both sides of the bead equally and to really know where the center is. In your case, the center will be slightly to the left. Not that it really is, but given your right-side dominance, it will feell that way.

Candy your a God-send! Thank you so much for this tut. I have literally been trying to make these beads (without success) for over a year. This visual is so much easier for me, and I'll be giving it a try today.

I have the same problem as Debi. My base alway leaks out. Of course, my past attempts I have made disk beads and added the dots, but by the time I get to the encasing part and start heating the bead it flops over to one side or the other. Which makes the encasing heavier on one side and the base leaks out the other.

My question is this.
http://www.lampworketc.com/forums/uploadedimages.php?viewid=99501

In this picture how thick is the clear and where should I be heating it? Side to side and only the clear? or Directly centered?

This bead needs to have a lot of encasing glass. Here's a side shot of the encasement:
99875

You'll want to keep the heat ONLY on the center. In this design, the clear encasement glass will pull the dots out into triangles. If you use a thin layer of encasement glass and then tuck the ends in (like you would do for encased flower beads), the results will be drastically different. In this case, you WANT the distortion. :D

I hope that helps!

Hi Verena!

I love seeing what you've done so far!

My encasement doesn't go all the way to the mandrels either.

99880

It's pretty close though. I can't stress enough that this type of bead takes a lot of encasing glass in proportion to the base. That's why it’s important to keep the base small, which isn't always easy given how many dots you have to apply to achieve the desired effect (esp. if you use twice as much transparent vs. opaque!) After you've made enough of these, you'll get a feeling of how much to use. :)

Teri

I did apply some heat to the encasement after I put it on there so that it wouldn't pop off before I could take a picture of it! :D Looking at the bead I can see a little ripple where I started and stopped. To get a nice even coat from start to finish does take practice and I don't think it's critical to the success of the bead. As long as it's not hugely drastic i.e. a huge bulge on one side with a thin trail on the other. Small inconsistencies can be evened out with heat. Glass flows and as long as it doesn't have to flow too much too far, you'll be fine!

99502

Like this:

Great tutorial. Those are lovely beads with all the layers you add. And I love the few words, lots of pics way of explaining!

I can do an encased triangle just OK, but when I try to get the triangles of two solid colors, my triangles look more circular with rounded ends..any tips???
Im starting with a small black spacer..adding four white dots on the left and right shoulders of the beads, not melting in completly and encasing.

Wow, great beads everyone! I've put in a couple more months of PPP since my last dismal attempt, and I'm happier with this one.

Thanks for a super tut!

Candy, I have never been able to make this style of bead no matter how much I practiced, but after seeing your tutorial I may give it another go. Your beads are gorgeous!!!!!

Thanks Candy, my problem is the nice big thick wrap of clear. I need to learn how to do just that part evenly around the first time.

Do you melt a large gather to do that?
thanks,

thanks,

Yes. With practice, you'll know how large the gather will need to be to adequately encase your base bead.

Really nice with the silvered ivory, and I like the glow of the color too.

Thanks, beadmama and Kristin. Candy uses silvered ivory in some of the beads she pictures at the bottom of her tut. I especially like the one she made using Opal Yellow (?) and Topaz.

I tried this for the first time yesterday and it felt so much easier than most tutorials. Made this bracelet--not completely finished, with the beads I made with this tutorial.
