Open valve on torch about one turn and sneak up on torch opening (from under side) with a lit match or use spark lighter.... IF you just try poking match in front if torch head it will blow flame out every time...

Always Safety.....
Unscrew the torch head off the canister, when reconnecting, press the torch firmly down into the canister parallel. That should take care of the problem. If it doesn't take the canister back to where you purchase it.
If you smell gas, nothing is happening when you light the torch, disconnect right away.
Do not experiment, by lighting matches, to check for leaks.

hold a lit match under the torch head, otherwise as Dale said, the pressure will blow it out.
