Making Frog Beads

I am a newbie (and admit that I love jumping ahead of myself, but it usually works out in the end) and I desperately want to make those really cute frog beads. I tried one today and it's already in the garbage can. My four year old thought it was really pretty, but little did he know it was supposed to represent a critter! Any hints?
