I have a customer that would like a hollo bead pendant with sand in it, but I am not sure if this is possible. Has anyone done it and if so how did you keep the sand from coming out. Thanks,
Laura

I think I remember on Corina's website, a while ago, someone making hollow beads with frit in them. I think it was her Frit Happens page? You could do it if you glued the ends shut, with a wire through for attaching, and then using bead caps to cover the holes.

I make beads with sand and clear encase. If you want to make hollow, you can make a thin walled hollow, roll in the sand, then encase. Just make sure the sand is really dry and very light on the bead or it will crack and bubble.

You could make a hollow pendant with a smallish hole on the backside somewhere...anneal the piece then afterwards insert the sand and fill the hole with a clear glue or epoxy.

Or something like this (http://beadwork.about.com/b/2007/06/25/from-the-flame-of-tink-martin-comes-one-cool-zissou-water-globe-lampwork-pendant-bead.htm), only with sand. The hole is where the pendant "cap" is.

Now that I'm thinking about it, John, I think the bead on Corina's website was by Tink, too.

I was going to so something like this someday.....(after I learned how to make a good hollow :) )I think I figured on doing the silver lined bead/rivet technique. You know, get a couple silver domed caps, and silver tubing, flare the tube's ends and hammer flat to form the rivet ends. The caps and silver tubing would keep in the sand, and you'd have a pretty silver lined bead too! You'd probably have to make your mandrel hole sort of largish, and make sure the tubing fits snug to it, just like lining any ol' bead. Fit the tube in half-way, fill the bead with sand, and then push the tube through and finish the rivet end. At least that worked in my head, I haven't done it yet. :)
Good luck!

I have a wonderful article by Lisa Walsh entitled "Timeless Treasure Hollow Memento Bead" which was published in the July-August 2006 "Step by Step Beads" magazine; I don't know if you can find this back issue on line (check here - and maybe write them a request...I don't see it listed), but it gives a step-by-step on making a hollow (which I KNOW you can do...I saw your great YouTube video!), and then gives a guide on capping and finished the ends to hold your "treasures", whatever they may be! http://www.lapidaryjournal.com/store/sbsbeads.cfm

This would probably serve your purposes quite well!

Good luck!

This is SO OLD (c. 2005)! I can't even believe I found the photo. LOL!

Sand works really nicely in them, too.

Where do I find your riveting and bead cap tutorials Tink?
I'm finally feeling brave enough to try it!

Ooooh I remember when you presented the thyme stuffed one!!!! I had a fleeting thought about commissioning an entire set of cooking herbs, so I could give an 'emergency seasoning stash' to a chef friend that Christmas. (Figuring that would be sufficient lead time LOL). I gave her a new knife instead, how lame.

I love your globes, but I miss the hollows with the "motto" bead caps.

Oh I still do those. I tend to offer them to regular customers before "going public" with them, and they always find homes before I get to that point. LOL! The non-riveted beads with caps often have mottoes, too.

I just did my first publicly available "Frit Happens" globe. I think "Spare Thyme" will be next. LOL! Nothing like revisiting old ideas, eh? I found a post on Wet Canvas with an earlier Frit Happens bead that was from almost five years ago.

I feel old.

You must be a mindreader: On today's to-do list for the dungeon is a little grouping of micro-marbles with stars on them :-) We'll see if I can pull it off.

LOL !!

I have to admit Tink, when I first saw this bead, I wasn't thinking thyme. 8-[
