Do you need different glasses than the dididium glasses for working with boro?

Yep. Check with Mike at Aura Lens. He has the good stuff...

Just remember, you get what you pay for.

Yes you do evenia.

Soft glass does not generate a lot of radiant energy (heat, or infrared). The torch flame is "relatively" cool.

Borosilicate on the other hand requires a fairly intense flame, the glass stays quite hot and there is a lot of radiant heat energy. Additionally, there are significant visible light flares apart from the usual sodium flare that can be quite blinding.

"Proper" borosilicate eyewear resolves both issues, the additional IR (heat) filtration and the additional visible light filtration. There are a number of filters available for borosilicate, from as simple as a polycarbonate welder's clip on filter to fit over existing AUR-92/ACE/didymium glasses, to full blown split lens top of the line filters.

Mike I was looking at your AGW 203 selections. Will those be OK? I have some $ that I want to get a Cuda and needed accessories out of, a NG line, a ventilation system, glasses and some boro glass. I also need to stock up on moretti and findings. So I am trying for economical. My big shows are over for a few months so I won't be pulling in a lot more $ for a bit. I know that the more you spend tthe better off you are.

The AGW-203 is a great entry level filter. It is not designed for advanced techniques such as fuming, or for large pieces, but is super for beads, pendants and small sculptures.

For the Phillips glasses, which filter would we need? I'm doing mostly beads and pendants. I haven't figued out fuming... yet. And I don't think I want to do larger pieces (certainly couldn't do it with my piranha....)

I looked at the technical data, and it said something about "Boroscopes are available in a Phillips 3 or 5 depending on your personal preference." Well, I don't KNOW what my personal preference should be...! LOL!

And, do you happen to know if any of their frames are better for a smaller face? Generally the "generic" frames are too big and fall off...

For smaller things, shade 3 would probably be fine.

And, let me just put this out here first...

I know Aura Lens is a controversial topic on here, as is the whole Aura Lens vs. Phillips debate. Whatever brand you buy, do some research. Research what both companies have to say about their products and what research and development they have done in the field. It's not like a torch where if one doesn't work for you you just sell it and get another. I don't know of any place to get any new eyes.

Just know the facts, and choose wisely. This should not be viewed as an endorsement for any particular company (if someone were to ask me, I do have a preference). I just want people to do as much research as they can and not buy the cheapest or the first thing they come across.

Is it possible to use my #5 welding glasses that I use for brass and silver brazing on Borosilicate glass or should I opt for something better? I am new at this so any help will be appreciated. I have read the rest of the posts and kind of get the impression that my welding glasses may not be enough. Your thoughts please. Thanks BW

bw, shade 5 is great. you still need didy's to remove the sodium flare, and then your shade 5's over top of them will cover you all the way

I use the AGW-203's and I LOVE them!!! I soooo love my boro glasses...they are so easy to see through but they aren't so light as to blind me when I'm working with a lot of heat...they are perfect for me. To anyone who is working with clip-on lenses, save up some $ and get the good stuff...you won't BELIEVE the difference! Thanks Mike! :D
