Hi,
My husband was able to procure a Millenium Respironics oxycon 5 LPM. used.
Well, I turned it on and:
THe alarm sounded and the light turned on by service required.
There was air flowing and the flowmeter went all the way to 5 and a little past when you opened it all the way.
I am wondering what I need to do to make this usable for lampworking.
Now the filter is really dirty....
Of course I won't be breathing it either. I Don't know anything about oxycon....
Any help would be much appreciated.

How long did you let it run.... Some time they will alarm for first few minutes and when you reset them they go silent....

Other wise its telling you it is not happy........

See if you can find owners manual for it online (GOOGLE) , that will be first step in understanding how it operates...

If worst case comes try contacting your local hospital respritory therapy dept and ask for the people they use or know who service oxycons in your area. They may even listed in the yellowpages under medical supplies. They are designed so as to keep amatuers out of them but being mechanical creature folks are in the business of refurbishing them.

I would definitely clean the air filter, too. A vacuum with hose attachment would work. If you rinse it with water, be sure to let it dry completely before reinstalling it.

Mine alarm for about 15 seconds or so when first turning them on. Then they go quiet and do what they are supposed to do. The times they kept alarming were:

1) connector had gotten turned around so one was getting backflow
2) I didn't have my oxygen valve on the torch on, also creating backflow

Start by cleaning the filter and seeing if that will make it happier. It wants clean air just as much as we do.

One of mine will beep 3 times and then is silent BUT if in working, I turn my oxy back too much, the alarm beep will sound and won't shut off. I have to turn the unit off and then back on, get the 3 beeps again and then we're ok.
It's an older model.

Ya know, I think my other one is silent... I can't even remember a beep at the start but there must be one. That one doesn't groan if I turn the oxy back. Nice unit.

Good luck with yours.

With mine, my daughter's for medical use, it alarms for two reasons: not plugged in and the battery is getting low, or the oxy line out is not free flowing.

It does, however, alarm for several seconds when it is turned on.
