I use mine until the very end, when my hand gets to close to the flame I get out my long pliers and hold it with them. Glass is too pretty and expensive to waste.

Kalera
2008-02-02, 4:15pm
I heat the tip of another rod of the same color and stick them together. With practice, you can get a nearly seamless joint, and just go on using it without any waste at all.

I wait until I have a pile of them in the same color, then spend a few minutes melting them together into a longer rod that I use to make spacers...

Unless it is really expensive or hard-to-get glass; then I punty onto it and use it to the bitter end.

I usually join them to a longer rod, but sometimes I put it in my jar of shorts if I'm in the middle of something. When I'm 'warming up' at the torch, sometimes I'll melt like colors together. If i'm making frit, I go to the jar first to find colors.

If it's nice, expensive glass, I use every bit of them...usually, LOL.

Mostly, I dump them on my work surface (granite slab) and a couple of times a year sort through the mess and bag 'em up, to maybe trade or sell if I ever get a scale. I do have a separate section of the mess that I try to put the expensive shorts in....

I throw them into a 9x11 cake pan and then when I'm out of a color or running low, I'll go pick out the shorts in said color and fuse them together.

Keep a pile and make them into Beads of Courage - use up leftover stringer or twistie bits while I'm at it. I use them down to the last maybe 1/8" - whatever I need to hold onto them with pliers....

CO_Phantom
2008-02-03, 1:15am
I'll use them down to where I feel the heat and then, depending on if I still need that color immediately, I will either toss it aside to deal with later, or I will use the hemostats and use it up entirely.

The ones that are tossed aside for later...well, I have ambition to either make them into frit, or use them if I need a little bit of a color later. I can just grab 'em in the hemostats and use 'em up.

I won't throw them away, though. I hate to waste glass.

You didn't leave an option for "Send them to me please" or "I've bought people's shorts!"
I don't have shorts of my own--I spin them onto the rod as I'm making a base bead...don't have any fancy rod holder or pliers--I've gotten really good at "stick & spin" on the rods as they get too short for me to hang onto--I just spin them into the base of a bead & Crunch-Press it! I use a random tool off the table to keep them spinning/melting in semi-straight. (Whimsicalities tools are great for poking the rod scraps back in line & so is a tiny brass marver)
Silver glass scraps (because all mine has been gifted!) get used on top, to the last little chip--If it's really short, I might nip it into little millifiore sized pieces & stick my bead into/onto them when it's hot to pick them up. That's the nice thing about the silver glasses--add a few twists & even the little chips can give you something fun!

I add them to a longer rod also...not necessarily the same color. In fact, as the longer rod I use those weird colored rods that I wonder why I ever bought and know I won't use for anything else :)

I melt mine on the end of the same color and use to the end, bash some into frit and use others that are a little longer to pull a 1 or 2mm stringer end to use for swirls. I have a glass full of the latter in all colors, and it comes in handy when I decide to swirl something after I have started the bead.

Awsome ideas everyone! I didn't know I could fuse them to one another, I figured it would cause a weakness in the glass. But know that I think about it that doesn't make sense, we add glass to glass all the time. Duh!

When I took my first class the teacher showed us how to do it. She said to slightly pull the "fuse" apart as it is hardening up so that you don't get a big lump. This way, for some reason it helps avoid any "shocking" later when you are melting to that point - not always, but most of the time.

Yeah, I use 'em, I save 'em, I sort them into transparents and opaques... and occasionally sift through looking for enough butt-ends of that one color I know I bought years ago that would be *perfect* for that one particular project... but mostly I use them for stringers.

Hayley they look like a very cool tool!
I use a pair of Murrini hemostats - the best investment I ever made. I've even got used to manipulating then so I can hold them the same way as I do a rod. I can use rods down to the last 3/8"
They'll hold the thickest rod you can imagine, but they are no good for any diameter smaller than approx 3mm... & the last lot of ASK colours I got are more like stringers than rods!
Think I'll have to look at a pair of the Micro Merikals ;)

rainygrrl
2008-02-06, 6:58pm
That tool does look cool! I find the murrini hemostats hard to use--not coordinated enough, I guess. I always fused my shorts until I read a tip here about using a wooden clothespin soaked in water. I wish I knew who mentioned this. It works for me, although the ends get burnt and you have to replace the clothespin periodically. You might even be able to carve a stringer holder into it, I'm not sure.

I've been one to just throw the shorts into a tin, with the intention of making frit out of it. Well as it stands I could probably make frit for everyone on LE and then some. Lately I've been taking the 2-3" peices on my bench and practicing making spacers with them as a warm up. I figure I used that color for something recently and a spacer wouldn't hurt. I just get it warm enough to grab onto the mandrel then I let go of it, (I do like my fingertips!) and practice my heat control by letting it wrap itself around the mandrel. At least I'm using them up, not casting them aside.

My answer to this question has a direct relationship to another question, which is "Do you want suppliers to put labels on all of your rods".

And the answer to that is no, because I like to use my shorts as I go along, but if they have labels I have to stop, pick up another rod and then sometime later spend time taking all the labels off before I can go weld them together to use them up. Or I have to waste my time before I torch taking the labels off.

Either way, I use those darn shorts up completely and curse the people who sold me the glass while I'm doing the label removing. :D

I also use up all my stringer leftovers and bits by breaking them into small pieces, separating them by colour and using them as frit.

ohh i'm a label freak, i want every thing labeled, i hate not knowing exactly what i'm using, i take a lot of notes about successes and failures so knowing exactly what i was using is essential. most of the moretti colors and vetro i know just looking at it, but my silver glass... soo much of it looks alike before it hits the flame that i feel the need to label everything. i guess i'm the odd man out, lol

I do all of the above, depending on the color or my mood. I do have a huge bottle of them. I have labels on all of my rods and if I forget to take the label off before I get too close to the end I hold it with tweezers to finish up.
As for the silver glass, I use it to the bitter end. I do like the idea of cutting them into chips. I'll have to try that. Cool idea.

Great hubby's choice........Never thought about making twisties or paddles for center to make latachino.
What I do is make beautiful focal Paciso Beads. Reckless abandmont I call it. Something I pulled out of my Watercolor paintings. Lay it down and let her rip...........
I have all my shorts together.
close my eyes reach down pick up at least 3 shorts. than heat the tip of the short ,
let it fuse to dipped mandrel. Than do the same to the others. I let them go where they want to and I think they come out beautiful.
Secret is don't choose by colors. If you end up with all 3 being the same color. I use an
adventurne stringer Gold Blue or Green. Just poke it into the mix and let it do what it chooses, also black ,twistie, foil etc.
Please excuse my spelling, due to illness for a long time I have forgottened how to spell.
I have reverted back to Starting in the middle of a word and end it .

I melt them into a bead I'm making. I also gather up all the bits on my table put them into piles that play nicely and make what I call "waste beads". Sometimes they come out ahem and sometimes they're very pretty. I do it by melting a little glass onto the mandrel then when it's hot I just start picking up the bits. It's kind of an adventure and it keeps my rather small worktable (a slab of marble really) clean.

All my shorts get a clear 6mm handle and on the end I make mini marbles with a dot of the color the short is, so when I'm looking for color I just look at end of rods for color dots instead of looking at the 'color short' end... I know this might sound a little excessive, but I really don't use a TON of different colors so after a few sessions you ahve all the 6mm clear rods you need with the color dot marbles/counterweight/whatever ya wanna call em already premade and prelabeled correctly...

I use the add the end to the a new rod method. Except with clear. I have a ton of clear shorts. To be effective with clear it requires cleaning and picking ends, then there is still scum and bubbles. I do it if I am out of clear and the new order hasn't arrived yet.

You can just burn off the labels if you have good ventilation. I just weld them together and then burn off the label. Very very rarely do I have to worry about pulling residue off the end, and I would have had to do it anyways because its from the glue, not the paper.

Hi Everyone, this is Glenn. I got tired of of getting to close to the flame, So I developed a light weight short rod holder. I use mine everyday. The nice thing about my rod holders is you can actually pick a rod up off your work table while keeping your bead warm with the other hand. when rotating the rod it stays straight.
You can continue working the rod down to one half of an inch.

The main problem is 90%+ of my shorts is 12mm-17mm clear or black. I don't have much variety. If you can use a lot of clear I will be happy to send you a pile though.

mary1_$
2010-05-29, 5:33am
I could fuse the clear togather and use them. I use clear to pull stringers to twist with as well. Fuse them togather and pull large stringers for encasing beads etc.But you can do that yourself. I use a large amount of clear and black so I try to fuse them most of the time. Black adds zing to some frit. Depends on what color base bead you use and what color you crush with the black to make the frit. I love making my own frit as I have colors no one sell's or I can't remake. Makes the beads one of a kind when the frit is gone. HA HA! If you save some short's and want some frit let me know. Some people don't want to make frit. I use a resporator when I make it I use a coffee bean grinder to make mine. I get great frit with it but it is a mess to do. Glass dust everywhere. Not all coffee grinders hold up well with glass. If you do send some I need to know what coe it is so I dont mix them. I will send you some of the frit I have on hand. Have you had any that is fine as dust? I could send you some. But I use a mask when I use it. I don't want and in my lung's. Let me know.Lovies Mary

Duh...why didn't I think of that! I just keep piling them up. I make frit sometimes, but I have a huge stash of shorts\\:D/

As a newbie, I mostly use the shorts that others don't want....but then they get way too short. What's the cheapest way to make a frit maker? I can't afford to buy one but want to make frit out of the 'short shorts'.

If you have a kiln you can pop them in, heat 'em up for an hour or so, them pluck 'em out and drop them in some water... put a coffee filter in a strainer and pour the water and glass into it... let the water drain off and lay the "frit" out to dry.

Your welcome! I learned it from Leah Fairbanks... kinda. She heats her glass up in the torch and drops it in water but if your shorts are too short then you can heat them in the kiln and pluck 'em out with a long hemostat or tweezer... easy! :)

Oh and this way eliminates any of the glass dust like when using a hammer.

I use Murrini Hemostats from ARTCO (http://www.artcoinc.com/hemostats.php) for my shorts. I love this tool!! I use them all the way to less than 1/2". The tiny bits that are left I plan on using for fusing.

I save everything. I use them down to the barest part where it hurts (years of baking have given me asbestos fingers). I have a "special shorty" bin for my silver glass. I even save silver glass stinger shorties. I use them for making frit. My buddy Dave and I collect all the shocked glass off our work table and make "party frit" with all the cheap glass and special blends with the bigger pieces. I use silver glass in the stick and swirl method where you stick a shorty to the bead and head and swirl until every drop melts in. He just bought a frit maker from Devardi to keep up with all our shorties. Its a lot of fun making and naming them and of course testing them :)

I have different containers labeled , CIM shorts, Moretti shorts, etc etc and when I run out of glass and money, I glue them together lol

I love my shorts. They have saved my ass many times.

I posted this tip a while back. I just melt the end of the rod and slightly squeeze the molten glass with my pliers. I do it on a slight angle so I can hold them with the pliers when I use them in the flame. Then I place it in fiber blanket to cool slowly. With the expensive silver glass, I melt some clear on the end of the rod and then squeeze with my pliers. This is so I can use every bit of it. Waste not, want not. Right?

I didnt find my choice on list... I heat them up and attach them to an end of a same color rod, and I just keep torching. I do this every time after torching. If it is shorter than 4 inches, it gets transformed to a long rod! If I run out of color and dont have anything to attach it to... I am in trouble, it messes up my system. I cant stand loose shorts piling up! Yeah, kinda control freak... I sweep my table with a paint brush to make sure there is no little shards. I am helpless...

Hahaa, you are funny!
I just do it, cause I want to find my colors fast, and to know how much I have them, and the biggest reason is, that I dont have yet a proper storage for my glass, so I have to try to make the best out of it, so I actually can work some. It is not always a blessing, Im tellin ya! Sometimes I think I waste so much time with organizing, that I dont have time left to torch! :pout:

Sometimes I donate my shorts to the local glass artists society, ISLAGA, so new members can have glass to experiment with.

I use rubber-handled alligator clips I got at home depot and modded a bit with my pliers as short holders. The very tiny <1" long shorts that remain after that go into a jar, and eventually get used to messily mush onto a more organic focal or something like that.
