If you have a kiln it is very easy to make your own goldstone stringer. Many suppliers carry large chunks of gold stone. After you bring the goldstone up to temp, then you can punty up to it and case it in a thin layer of clear or transparent colors to get different effects. After it has been cased, you may proceed to pull whatever diameter stringer you desire.
Not to mention that making your own stringers looks a lot better. The pre-made stringers are mostly clear glass with a little bit of goldstone thrown in, so they thin out pretty fast.

You can also buy some goldstone frit in the bulk frit buy#2 that Beka is having here on LE..
or you can buy a big chunk... which is really cheap too.

You don't need a kiln - a hot plate will do to heat up those goldstone chunks. I also agree that the commercial varieties are very wimpy in sparkle power. I like Corina Tettinger's method. Encase the heated and formed goldstone with transparent dark amethyst for a very wonderful sparkle.

Heck, I don't even use a hot plate, just slowly introduce the chunk into the back part of the flame. Occasionally a small chip will fly, but not often, if you do it slowly.
