Hi everyone,

I bought several pounds of River Rock a while back but haven't really done much with it. When I first got it I went, eew, and thought they sent me the wrong color.

Now I hear it's sold out and not expected to be made again.
I haven't seen a lot of beads made with it so I was wondering if you all could show me your beads made with River Rock and maybe it will inspire me to play with it as I wasn't that impressed with the first beads I made with it.

Also, are there any colors or techniques that go really well with it?

Thanks,

Debra

Well I haven't decided to sell it yet. I'd like to explore it first.
But if I do decide to sell it you'll be the first to know.
Although someone just Pm'd me and told me how much it was selling for. "GASP"
I'm glad I bought it when I did.

Tink and Naos, I've always been a big fan of your beads. Thank you for posting pictures. they're beautiful.

Thank all of you for posting pictures. I love them all.
Kevan that first bead is wonderful! What color did you use with it and is that just plain River Rock or did you roll it in silver?

If this is selling for as much as I was told it was selling for, I'm afraid to even use it now...LOL

Psyche is made by Double Helix Glassworks and is one of those infused with silver. I think it is $70-$100 a pound. It is so cool.

Frog - You know, I'm of the school, just use it. It is better than letting it just sit there and collecting dust.

Thank you Lara! I'll go look for that Psyche.

I will use it, but I want to make sure I know what to do with it first. I don't want to waste it due to trial and error. Hence the reason for this post. I want to learn what works and what doesn't before I start playing with it.

I bet it would look really great with some electroforming. I tlooks like it would. I've been dying to get an electroforming kit for over a year now. Maybe I'll save it until I can miraculously afford the electroforming kit.

That's what I have, ie; River Rock aka Odd Avacodo according to Frantz.

It IS beautiful glass. I kept treating it like Ivory but thinking it looked way better and wished I had spent more time NOT covering it up with other glass.
So much more variation in colors than Ivory.

Thanks for the gorgeous beads picture show and the heads up!

Frog, don't worry about messing it up - it's as forgiving as Dark Ivory. Use silver, any of the silver glasses and enamels with it...it will love you back, I promise! :)

Question - are your rods smooth or rough?

GinnyHampton

I was gifted with a little stash at Christmas, so here's a few I made with some of my beloved river rock . . . . all of these are river rock with Terra and all are etched. Terra resists etching, so all of the Terra deco is shiny while the river rock is matte, it looks cool!!

Naos, my rods are rough like the dark ivory. I have some of the silver colors but haven't done much with them. I haven't had much luck getting them to work for me. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I think I just need to practice, but it's so expensive I hate to waste it so it just sits there....LOL

Wow, everyone's beads are stunning!

Debra, I have a few rods and they are smooth and not at all like dark ivory. They look like the picture below.

I made a raked bead that I really like with river rock, and I tried to replicate it with the darkest rod of dark ivory I have. It didn't really work. Hopefully you can see the difference in reticulation. The river rock is the darker one.

ETA: Sorry for the shockingly big pic!

Hi Roberta,

I wonder if there were different batches of it? Mine feel more like the rods of dark ivory.
I know I love dark ivory so when I saw the river rock I bought lots. When I got it I cursed Frantz for sending me the wrong color.....LOL I expected it to look more like the dark ivory but it looked like baby poop, so here I thought I was stuck with this ugly baby poop color. But then I melted the end of one of the rods and flattened it and I saw that it looked more like dark ivory and less like baby poop so I had to take all my cursing back. :-#

Thank you for posting the dark ivory and river rock beads together so I can see the difference. It's definitely nicer than the dark ivory.

I can't imagine why they can't figure out how to make it again.

Debra

Vivian, I almost missed yours!
They're beautiful! but how to you get such pretty colors out of the silver glass. It just doesn't seem to want to work for me.

Does the River rock try to swallow colors like the dark Ivory?

Frogsongstudio
2008-02-07, 4:58pm
Roberta, I'm looking at the picture of your river rock. I don't know if it's the lighting or what, but yours almost looks translucent. Are your rods translucent? Mine are opaque.

VivianLampwork
2008-02-07, 5:00pm
Thanks, river rock just seems to be a good base for the silver glass & it will swallow it up if you work it to long. When using the striking silver glass like terra & khaos just heat it up really hot & take it out of the flame. You'll see it turn a real dark color as it cools, then flash it back in the flame until you get the colors you want. You can also spot heat areas to get different colors. If you are going to encase, you do that while the bead is the dark color at the beginning.

*Naos*
2008-02-07, 5:04pm
There were different batches. I prefer the rough rods because I think they spread more. I have a bunch of the smooth rods but they tend to be more shocky for me. Quite a few prefer the smooth though.

Ginny - WOW - that set is just scrumptious!

The number is 791931 Vetrofond Avocado Odd , that is the River Rock

I've had this in my rack and never tried it until a couple of weeks ago. I love it. But it's o.k. that I bought the River Rock too. I only have a couple of rods left of the Avocado Odd, so now I have a bigger stash! Plus, I have some regular Avocado pastel that I haven't tried yet. It was in the same bin as my Avocado Odd.

This gets so confusing with all these same colors being named differently.

Frogsongstudio
2008-02-08, 12:29am
Barbara, they aren't actually the same color. From what I understand, the River Rock was basically a mistake that was made when they were making the Avocado. So it's different then the Avocado and it's also the reason they can't make more of it. Because they don't know how they made it in the first place.

Hopefully someone will figure it out though.

You're right, they aren't the same between Avocado and Avocado Odd. The regular Avocado is #591210 and the odd, called Avocado Odd, is #791931. I have both, but the 791931 is the same as what's called River Rock.

If all the suppliers would post the same #'s as the mfg. companies use to identify their glass colors, it would make it a lot easier for us to determine what we're buying instead of relying on esoteric names that each supplier wants to give them.

Right. Plus Avocado is an Effetre color and River Rock is a Vetrofond color. 591... is used to designate an Effetre color and 791... a Vetrofond color. So you can tell at a glance they're different manufacturers.

I'm so glad I bought a lot of rr when it was first available! I've been stretching it by using a base of vetrofond dark ivory, then putting a little rr on top.

I really like the vetrofond dark ivory too (the odd semi/translucent one). It's also pretty cheap! It doesn't curdle like the rr, but otherwise is very nice. I wouldn't pay extra for the really translucent rods though...it pretty much turns opaque anyway, unless you make a quick disk.

I got mine from Jessica at Phoenix. I just got more last week and it is pretty translucent, if you are worried about that.

Love the beads in this thread!!
