Hi there!
I just LOOOOOVE Kandic Seeber's stripe beads; I really like how she gets her subtle stripes and the different color variations. I was just wondering if anyone out there had a nice tutorial on how to do them.
Thanks Bunches!

Striped beads are a lampworkers basic - that Kandice has totally perfected! There are tricks to getting the color to the bead hole, but I've not persisted enough with striped beads to tell you how. The basics are to lay dots around the middle of a brown base bead in say the lavendar. Then build up a few rows of clear over those original dots and slowly melt these down. As the clear spreads it will stretch itself and the underlaying glass into stripes.
Hope that helps you somewhat until a tut comes along.

Hi.
Yeah, Lara, I have tried sending her a couple of e-mails and so far, no luck on a response.
I know how to do basic stripes, but I'd love to know the steps she uses to get such a variance of colors. I know she's layering dots, but so far my abysmal few attempts were, well....abysmal! :)
Thanks for the fast responses!
You can also do it by using a twistie, too, instead of dots. I find I can get much more detail that way.

Thanks Tink!
Just LOVE those twisties! I'm totally addicted! I'm really loving that wig-wag tut and tomorrow I plan to be very strict with myself and sit down at the torch and actually TRY them! I've been wanting to try them for a while, but it seems that I have A.D.D. when it comes to my lampworking..I get distracted by anything shiny and sparkly. It's actually a pretty pathetic sight to behold when I get a package of new glass rods. I get this googly look on my face and turn into Gollum. All I can seem to do is pet them while whispering 'My precioussssssssss'

in terms of the colours... try a brown base with lavender and transparent orange stacked dots... then stretch them out. The orange and lavender should make a brown and if the orange dot is smaller than the lavender you'll see the lavender peaking out at the sides. I haven't tried this but I get a nice reddish brown from layering tangerine (Vetrofond, I think-- sorry, not near my stash) over sky blue opaque.

I love her work. Someday I will own some.
Corina has a subtle stripes tutorial on her site somewhere. If I remember right, she calls them her comfort beads. It details how to get subtle color variations. If you have trouble finding it, let me know. I'll help you look.

I knew I wouldn't be able to stand it, I had to go see if I could find it and here is the link:

Hi!
Thanks so much Mary for responding. I know the exact tut from Corina you're talking about and I really like making those. My fave combo so far is her Ink Blue & Dk. Aqua over Ivory & Rubino Oro with Dk. Trans. Lavender on white. Yum! Pssst..By the way Mary, I love your tutorials on that cute little frog and your implosion beads. Way too kewl!
Yeah, I totally agree with you Nancy. Every time I go onto her website, I just drool over her beads! Absolutely gorgeous!!

That's what I was going to suggest as well. Corina's tutorial.
It's basically a dark transparent color over white dots.

Hi!! Wow - I had no idea you sent me emails....I haven't seen them at all - I am so sorry about that! I don't want you to think I am ignoring you.
Really, my stripes are made with the basic method - just lots of practice.
1. Lay a small base bead - about the size of a small spacer - in any transparent or opaque color
2. Place 4-6 small bumps around the base in an opaque color
3. Layer on top of those bumps as many times as you like with different colors, alternating between trans and opaque, melting them about halfway each time.
4. Wind a thick layer of encasing in any transparent around the whole thing, connecting the dots. Mine usually looks like a sideways pizza by now.
5. Melt the bead in slowly so that the encasing pulls the bumps out into stripes.
Different colors will perform differently - some will stripe beautifully, and some will bleed out the sides onto the encasing.
Hope this helps. :) Thanks for the kind words!

Looking at Corina's tutorial....my method differs in a few ways - my bumps start smaller, there are more layers, I don't melt them all the way in before encasing, I have more glass encasing the bead. I think - from the look anyway. I also don't have as many bumps as she does - I use the base as part of the stripe.

Hi Kandice!
Thank you sooooo much for responding! I really appreciate it. :) I did try e-mailing you a couple of times about two months ago asking if you'd be willing to share some tips on your technique (I used the e-mail addy from your website). Don't feel bad about not getting them and responding...I figured you either had too many e-mails to sort through before mine or it had been directed into the junk folder or something.
I find it very funny that you posted some of the same bead sets I've been drooling over!
Anyway, I'm off to my 'studio' (the glorified term I use for my garage ;) ) to try some. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.
Wishing you the best. And keep cranking out those pretties!

No joke there. Hers were some of the first beads I drooled over. Precision and color. (I still drool)

Me too.

OMIGOD me too! You can't (or maybe you all can) imagine my disappointment when my first beads didn't turn out all perfectly shaped with pretty colors ... what's' the opposite of idiot savant, just idiot? I am color-challenged, but am slowly learning. I also thought you just used your regular rod, I had no idea about stringers, and just didn't understand why the end of a BE rod wouldn't make little tiny dots. ](*,)
I still drool over her beads, but I just keep it to a minimum so I don't torture myself. Thanks for sharing! Lisa

I had typed up a quickie striped beads tut for someone here and she did me a favor and posted it in this section. Here it is:

Just gives a couple of tricks to make things easier. If you use it, be sure to post your beads!
