There, I said it. I was going to post in the bathroom but what the heck, I'll do it here. :)

I think Zeus is my favorite, but maybe black cherry, or oxblood, or wait the crystal clear might be my favorite. I wish I could take some decent pictures. The ones I have never do the pieces justice.

So, anyone want to join me? What are your favorite soft glass 'Elvis' colors?

Oh, don't get me started!! These guys are my BEST friends!!

Word has it that the 104 mystery boxes are in VERY short supply, and there's only about 8 of them left (got a message from Jenny today, as a matter of fact). Also, she tells me that if you get a box, there's a feedback form in there, and if you return the form, it goes into a drawing for a free pound of glass! Jenny told me the deadline was for the end of the month...but she hasn't had any responses yet! So she's considering extending the deadline to the end of April...to me that sounds like good odds if no one is submitting yet! :waving: Also, they're new website is online now, and is here: www.taglass.com

Anyway, hmm, I have a shameless plug for them too.....
Back when the bead show was in Tucson, I had mentioned something to Ross at ABR that I was testing a new color for TAG...well, Ross has it now, so keep you're eyes peeled for the "new-comer".

Zeus is my ALL TIME favorite, but then I'm partial to ultraviolet purple. (try it over transparent orange, or gold rubino), to me, there's nothing else like it. Tibet is gorgeous. Buddha is a beautiful creamy blue when heavily reduced. The clear is CRYSTAL! And hopefully they're making more Cezanne! This glass rocks.

If you're a boro worker, Paul's boro line colors are so nice... fab colors; check out the gallery artists!....just wish they'd make a 104 mango or apricot...hint hint Paul!! :)

Geeze, I'm not complaining! Luv you guys!!

Just what I get for posting and going to town. A mystery box!?! Must check into that as soon as I'm home and hope the budget allows. Edit: I couldn't wait. I looked. I think the budget could have handled it but they seem to be gone. :pout:

I get mine from Ross at www.abrimagery.com. I can do the link if anyone wants the exact page. I don't like his pictures I order on faith, which I rarely do. But I love the glass. (It is in a tie for me with Black Nebula and Green Envy but that is a different company, they too have a fabulous clear. I hope they produce more colors soon.) I had decent pictures. I really really want to order more colors soon, but will wait until after the off mandrel class I'm taking in a week. (Darn budget or lack of will power, I almost always try to order full pounds.)

Oh and Renee I'm jealous.

Wow! Such kind feedback! Thanks everyone!
Thank you, Nancy! BTW the 104 Mystery Boxes are still available... $100 for 2 lb of mixed Rare and Special soft-glass, with free shipping in the continental US. I know I have four or five at hand at the moment. These contain some of the stuff you see under "Rare and Special 104" on the site, www.taglass.com. Our Pay Pal link is funky today, but you can call us. The "Rare and Special" is incomplete right now, because I am running around like a chicken with it's... well you know where I'm going with that bloody metaphor. But these are the colors that we've only produced in small batches, or are otherwise experimental (and therefore aren't available in enough quantity to bother a real distributor like Paula or Ross or Winship with them.)
And YES! Thank you, Renee, the deadline for the drawing IS NOW OFFICIALLY EXTENDED! Folks who buy the Mystery Box get feedback forms that, when returned, get put in a drawing for free glass. I had put it at March 30th but glass-a-holics can be slackers on paperwork, so I will do the first Mystery Box Feedback drawing on APRIL 30th now. Your odds of winning are incredibly high at the moment, as no one has sent me back a form to date - laff! And really, we love the praise but need to hear back if people don't like something, too.

We have a Boro Box o' Mystery, as well, if you are bi-glassual. That's 3lb for $100, with free shipping in the continental US, $5 to Canada.

Well, since you guys love the glass, can someone please tell me how to get a reaction from zeus? I was highly disappointed. The stuff just stayed a flat light gold color on reducing. Apparrently there is a trick to using all of the siver colors and I am making some horribly expensive mistakes.

AH yes... the Zeus has puzzled lots of folks, but the secret appears to be to lightly reduce THEN strike it. It took me a few beads to work out the method, but about 4 passes in a moderately reducing flame, cool the bead (the Zeus should now have halos where you dotted it down, if you're doing dots) THEN reheat in a neutral flame once, twice, three times. Cool between each reheating and you should get some strong colors if you have a dark background color. It's not that interesting over white or ivory, but great on black and other dark colors. Also changes Rubino Oro in really interesting ways. I'll have to get a picture of that & post it. Thanks for asking! I really like Zeus, but I guess this reduce-then-strike thing is kinda different, even for the silver glasses. ~Jenny @ TAG

I finished my other work, so here are a few quick (meaning no tweaking) images of the Zeus beads I made this last weekend.

First, is Zeus over black Vetrofond, with encasement dots of TAG Super Clear. Zeus likes to be encased. If you are having trouble getting it to strike, sometimes it will strike easier under the clear.
115104

Here is Zeus over Effetre medium amethyst. Some parts are exposed, other parts have a little Super Clear over them.
115105

And here is Zeus on Effetre Rubino Oro, aka Gold Ruby. I have to thank Renee Wiggins in Tucson for this combo! When you reduce the Zeus, the Rubino goes gold and mirrored; but when I struck the Zeus the Rubino went orange!
115106

I hope this helps... I really like this glass. ~Jenny the Firebrand (and TAG soft glass gal)

Gorgeous beads Jenny!

BTW-I figured out why I was bubbling the clear....I lowered my O2 pressure a bit and switched to a fatter rod and voila--awesome clarity and no scumming! :-D I gotta order more fat rods--this clear is really nice!
I did some more TAG encasing and trying to keep to one silver color at a time...my results so far are good(knock wood!).
I think the cracking could be because I mix so many different manufacturers' glass all on one bead...... The cracking shows up after a few days(sometimes a month!) so I will keep my fingers crossed!
Thanks!!

Thanks, Nagi! Great tip on working with more gas, less oxy. That's a hotter flame, but it must be one of the secrets - now that you mention it, I am thinking that was the difference between the beads I made last week on the oxy-con and the tanked oxy (with the tanked oxy beads I had to pick more crap off the clear.) I think I have a half-pound of TAG Super Clear 'fats' in the shipping room as we speak, but I need to ask the guys to make the next batch gets pulled as half thin, half fat rods.
BTW, I am keeping an eye on this ASK+TAG bead to see if anything develops. If it cracks, I'll post a pic and see if we can figure out the culprit. Thanks! ~Jenny

Well... our typical rods are 4mm or so... and the fats are more like 5 - 7 mm. Not that big, really (I was surprised when I measured them, since they are NOTICEABLY fatter than the rest of the box, which is actually pretty thin at 3mm average.) And it is nearly a full pound. I saw one thin rod in there, must have been to bring it up to weight!

Yeah, the Silver Fir is good, and I am now out of it. (*Maybe* a quarter-pound left??) We'll need to make more, that was a pretty good color. I still have Taxco Silver Turquoise, Fire Opal, Green Silver Leaf, JD Mix and a few others of the Rare & Special 104 glass that was in the Mystery Boxes. www.taglass.com if you want to know more.
The next thing I plan to do for the 104 line is pull out and put on the website the "Rare & Special" stuff that was part of the regular runs: Like some striped rods that came from the bottom of the "Dalai Dark" batch. Or the half-pound of Zeus that came out cored with some streaks of Dalai. There are some amazing rods that are half-Dalai, half-Tibet - opaque caramel on the outside, and transparent amber/purple inside. Some of that was in the Mystery Boxes as "Transcendental." Woof. So many rods, so little time...

Thanks for the kind words on the Peach Cove (I liked that one, too.) Post some pics in the boro room -- I'd love to see your Wisteria + Cobalt Blizzard! ~Jenny

I haven't had much luck at all with the fire opal and Jenny I have tried everything you recommended for the grey llama, and absolutely nothing! And when I say nothing, I mean not the slightest little bit of colour change even when melting initially in a reduction flame. I've even tried it again on the Mega Minor I'm trialing for Nortel to see if a different torch would make a difference, but all I get is grey, and not even a very nice grey!
If anyone wants this glass it is free to a good home just pay me the shipping

This is my first try with.... it must have been zeus?
It's milky on the rod I believe.

I softened it in a slightly reducing flame, and thats what got the luminescent green (I think). the dark blue is the same colour, natural, no reduction.

Ah-there it is...wonder why it didn't show up before...thanks so much for the photo!!!
the fire opal looks interesting....what did it do/not do? Please post--it really helps making glass purchases.
I have a bunch of soft glass silver colors that kinda look the same---it's great that you posted the melted ends--that helps alot!

not saying this about any one manufacturer or glass, but....it's sometimes a bummer when you get something that looks or works exactly like another glass you already have. Thanks for the help!

Just a thought....another thing cool about Taxco Turquoise(as well as DH Psyche) is that it is great for getting that River Rock effect out of Marbled Avocado....if you can stand the shockiness of the glass(yikes!), it is a great cheaper alternative to River Rock....I couldn't get it to do the effect with some of the opaque silver glasses, but Psyche was good......it needs more working time but it will bloom!

I gotta see if annealing the rods help--otherwise I am gonna melt all those rods all together and pull my own stringer...yiii is it poppy!

Thanks for all the comments and questions, folks...
Carolyn, you are right -- the Grey Llama appears to be more than just a tough customer. I have been able to get some reactivity out of it with TONS of reduction (heating the hell out of the gather in a heavy reduction before even putting it on the mandrel, then a lighter reduction to melt it in.) I went for the big reducing flame after Paul was getting reactions from it on his big-ass Bethlehem boro torch. But as you can see from the shots on the website, it's reactions are, well, *subtle* is the kind word? LOL! But the point of putting it into the Mystery Boxes was so we could see if someone else could figure it out; we don't all run our torches or kilns or glass combos the same way, and I'm hoping someone will say "hey, I tried it with this other glass and WOW!" The Dinah Landers bead (pictured on the TAG site) was one of those... I hadn't gotten around to putting it over Opal Yellow before Dinah tried that in our "Trautman Reactives" class at Eugene Glass School. She got that opal-like patch pretty fast. I find Grey Llama either gives me the reaction in the first pass or two... or doesn't at all.
Now I wonder if parts of the batch are better or worse than others? Sheesh. I'm beginning to think the variables in making glass include such randomness as how you hold your mouth when you batch it.

Now, the Fire Opal batch is interesting. It gives streaky lines of color that change with repeated striking. It also changes/strikes when encased. I need to get some pictures of it up on the website soon. So I'll keep you posted.

And Nagi, you're right! - the duplication is why we included that question on the Feedback forms: "is this glass like another glass you have tried?" There is no point in us all doing the same thing. But so far our rods that look like, say, the Double Helix rods act differently on the bead. And the truth is, there are only so many effects you can get out of silver combinations, lol! ~Jenny @ TAG

Ellyloo, that's a lovely bead! Must be Zeus because those colors are pretty typical for it! :) I've found that more heat, and multiple reductions give that green-turquoise color, and the blues come out of less redux, and struck moderately. Zeus can really be controlled, and that's the wonderful thing about it! It's almost magical how the colors come up after a light redux, cool, then struck in a neutral flame. Best to try this glass over black, dark brown, dark blues, rubino like Jenny mentioned (thanks for your kind words darlin'!!) and my ultimate favorite, trans orange. Just go easy with this glass in the redux, let it cool, then strike in a neutral flame. Repeat till you get the color reaction you want!
Renee Wiggins

Here's some examples of Zeus, it's the electric blue over black, brilliant turquoise, and ultraviolet purple over orange. The last image of the beads in my hand has it over gold rubino, it's the last one on the right that looks orange!

JetAge Studio

All Zeus is TAG glass. I think because R4 carries the glass, there was confusion that Precision made it, but no.
My first batch of Zeus was seedy too (I bought it about 8 months ago, give or take..), lots of little bubbles, but the batches I purchased later are really clear with few "seeds". The glass still all works the same! Also, I discovered from some conversations with Jenny that Zeus will reduce with a gorgeous purple luster. I just made a set of organic disks yesterday with it, all with Zeus struck prior to the final redux exposure (so it's purple over the base color, AND has a purple luster on top!). I'll try to get the photos up soon. All I did to get the luster was to just wave it in a highly reducing flame back and forth (the luster effect is accumulative, so be patient) like you do other reducing glasses to get a metallic sheen. The luster on Zeus is subtle, not super metallic shiny, but lustrous, purple and beautiful! Just one more thing this fantastic glass does!

Here is the test I did this week with TAG + CIM orange.
I made the base of TAG Super Clear (that's what I do with the butt-joints) covered that in Moretti white (which is notorious for cracking when encased if you don't use that heat-sink of a clear or clear-colored base) THEN covered that in a nice layer of the CIM orange. Trailed on the TAG Zeus, reduced it at least twice in varying sized candles then struck it 3 - 4 times until the Zeus bloomed. Looks prettier now than when it went into the kiln, but that's partly because the orange looks funny when it's hot.

Ohhhh... reducing AND striking.
Psfffhhhhttt...

how do you know when it 'blooms'?

Firebrand Beads
2008-04-17, 10:38am
You'll see it change. I think the biggest "secret" with some of these colors is to let them cool in between the heatings. I like to have a halogen lamp right next to me, shining to the SIDE of my torch. I like it dark around the flame so I can see the edges of the fire, but then I bring the beads close to my face, and under the lamp, to watch the colors develop like a polaroid. So I reduce the Zeus first, bring it to the lamp, make sure I am seeing a little color change, then into a neutral flame up to a glow, out to the lamp to see the development, etc etc etc. There is a funny thing that happens in the flame, when the reduction first burns away as it begins to strike, that I call 'blooming' but it is hard to describe.
Oh, and I was thinking about what Carolyn had said, about not getting much from the Fire Opal batch. I tested that again last night and found the best color change was coming out UNDER a clear encasement. It continued to strike as I continued to heat it, but mostly after I had covered all the dots in clear!
This was hard to shoot.... and it looks a little more washed out here than it does in person.

Ok, I finally got the photos of the Zeus I've been working with lately...
I made a custom cane with a base of Eff Trans Orange, and encased that in Zeus. I lightly struck the Zeus before I pulled the cane...just to make sure I would get the gorgeous electric ultraviolet purple when I did my disk beads...this is a tricky thing mind you! :)
So, I pulled the cane, then wound it on my mandrel in an organic form, then HEAVILY reduced it when I was done making the bead. (Thanx Jenny for your tips!! They worked like a charm!) I discovered that Zeus will reduce with a super nice purple sheen....also the color goes dark, so my orange base now looks like raspberry!! It's sooooo gorgeous! I didn't do anything to enhance this color in the photos, just tweaked the contrast a bit, that it! This color is so nice. It also changes drastically depending on the lighting. In strong backlit light, the orange comes out, but in shadow, or diffused light, the purples, and purple sheen dominate! Just neat stuff! The dots however are Psyche, I wanted that to set off the purple with it's super metallic sheen.

This one shows how glossy the peacock luster is! 116778

This is the gold rubino backlit. It turns a really cool apricot color. Hard to see, but it has greenish yellow swirls through it, it really looks like boro. 116777

Kimberly that is GORGEOUS!! I love the fluidity!
BTW, Jenny helped me get the luster on my beads by telling me how YOU did it!! So I really have you to thank too. I was so happy when it all finally "clicked"! Just ask her...I think I was shouting with glee in my emails at her. I've been reducing EVERYTHING now, and am so surprised with some of the glasses I never got to do anything! Yay!

Nagi, I cant wait to see how rubino/zeus works for you!! It's so fun, please post your results! :)

KILLAH!! Nice work, nice work. I like the organic shapes on those disks, Renee. And Kimberly - your trees are me-e-e-e-elting! Me-e-e-elting!

One thing that I had tried with the Zeus was making some floral stringers. I put the Zeus over an ASK pink, pulled it down and did some flowers that didn't do much. But I'd encased them. So I put them on the outside and was pleased with the antique peach color that came from *reducing* the Zeus over the pink. Here is the bead - it's a large hollow of Cezanne (you can see the purple line of the sterling liner inside) with flowers of Zeus over one of the ASK Pinks. The whole thing was reduced heavily in the Kimberly-style (that's a technical term, lol!)

TAG has a new batch of Taxco available now on their website... I'd like to see what others have been getting color-wise from reducing this glass. Anyone have pictures?

BTW - those of you who got in on the Mystery Boxes have just over a week left to get your feedback forms in to me, to get into the drawing for a FREE POUND OF GLASS! There are precious few of them in right now so your odds are VERY GOOD! (:poke: Slackers! Lol!) In fact, you don't have to complete ALL of them to get into this drawing -- you get an entry in the drawing for each of the forms you return. Yet another reason I love my job! Good Luck! ~Jenny@ TAG

Woohoo! Jenny emailed me that I won the one pound of TAG 104!!!! I guess not too many of you sent in the feeback forms!

Thank you, Paul and Jenny!

Laff, that's true. Slackers! ;-> I had about four or five people from each COE return forms, and everyone who sent them in got an entry-per-form. So if someone sent in four forms, they got four entries. Hayley was pretty thorough and had at least a dozen forms returned. So that upped your odds, m'dear! BTW I'm sending you a rod of a new EXP that is a dark Green Dalai... deep heat a time or two, then strike for great streakyness. It's giving me nice blue and green colors so far... ~Jenny @ TAG

Here's the TAG Green Dalai image. It's an opaque forest-to-teal green in the rod. I'll put it on the site under Rare and Special 104. This was simply heated to the core a couple of times in neutral, then surface struck a couple of times and encased.119520
