I have been making some beads for my girls to use as hair ties...Im sure the method Ive been using has a name, but Im not sure what it is...I made a disk on a mandrel then decorate the top part of the disk...Ive been using the tangle free rubber bands to attach to my girls hair, but these are not so tangle free...I put the rubber band through the hole of the tie I made then just wrap it around the bead..they stay in nicely and look really cute.but .Ive been having to cut a little of their hair just to get the bands out..Would anyone have any suggestions on what I could use or another method of making a bead that would make a good hair tie?

What a cute idea.

Do you think using round elastic would work? It's covered with satiny stuff that would slide out better -- if you tied a knot and put a little glue on it?

I love to see what you come up with!

I found some satiny elastic at walmart..It works great for my redhead who has extra thick hair, but my little blondie has super fine hair that tangles as Im brushing it, so Im thinking Im not going to find anything for her hair..

Peg, tying the knot around the mandrel hole worked..I dont know why I hadnt thought of that.

for the little blondie how about taking a cloth headband and attaching a couple of the disks or use a piece of ribbon run thru the bead then tie it with a bow around a regular ponytail holder that works w/ her hair

I got a set of hair "twisties" in LV last year (I think that is were I was!) they are a boro dicro that is wound along a fat rod (about the side of a hollow mandrel) with about 1/4" spacing between the wraps so you can wind the hair into the center (where the mandrel was) Kind of gives you an Island kind of look (glass not braids)...does this make any sense? I will post pictures after the show I am in this weekend....no extra time right now.

I used to do fabric decorations on hair ties. I just bought what we typically used and attached it with fishing line. It always held real well and wasn't an issue with my daughter's fairly fine hair. Maybe some fishing line would hold a bead on. I'd do it the same way. A little like sewing a button, feed the line through where you had fed the elastic and under the hair tie and repeat then knot. I used a square knot. Good luck.

I'm not sure if this is similar to what you're talking about, but....
I took some of the fabric rubber bands you get at the store, wire-wrapped my flower bead to the band (crimping it tight), and it makes a cute ponytail-holder. (The other flowers in this picture are wire-wrapped to bobby pins.)

Those are adorable..I love those..Im going to try that ..right now I take the bands and pull it through the loop, then around the bead. They dont always stay in very well though.
