hello everyone, i was making a piece yesterday using morette 272 violet (the base color), 276 dark ivory, and 042 medium purple. i used the ivory and medium purple for dots. it was an off mandrel piece and by the time i got the dots on and disconnected the 272 rod i was left with a metallic gel pen like sheen on the part of the rod that had been sitting in the edge of my flame while i melted my dots in. i am on a hothead, and the sheen disappeared when i reheated the rod. am i just crazy or is there a way i can purposely get this sheen? oh yeah and i am using propane.

You are reducing it. Try working it higher in the flame. Purple and turquoise are very notorious for this. If you don't like it you can soak them in coke to take the shine off. If you do like it, work a little bit closer to the torch you will get a natural reduction. You can also get a reduction flame on a HH by covering the air holes with foil. Please be careful not to burn your self when doing this. Just wrap some foil around the holes, experiment what best works for you to take it on and off while torching. just a quick wave of the bead in the reduction flame should get it nice and glossy! It dose not take much!(i use a cut off foil grilling bag for the weight of it, and because it is made to be exposed to heat and flame)

Oh and a reduction flame gets pretty big, so be sure to turn down the gas or get ready for 12 in flames!! :)

i tried yesterday with a welding glove hubby has...read that somewhere here on LE...but was not sure how long to have it in the flame...also how hot about should the piece be before going reduction? i liked the effect and would love to get it on purpose!!

here is the piece i was making...i flattened the top added the decorations....then head...melted off the rest of violet rod and thats when it has metalisized...you can still see some on the bottom...it didn't get the edge like in that link candy...more so overall metallic. I am going to go out later tonight and see if i can get it to reduce by covering the holes on my HH...just waiting for daddy to watch baby...or baby to go to bed. I loved this reaction and am just so excited that i have a glass that may have some kind of reaction...i didnt think i had an glasses that had any kind of reactions!

Most people try to get that reaction on purpose. Try violet stringer melted on black. Also, if the thread Candy posted is the one I'm thinking of, it will tell you how to get that effect. It's very cool.

You can also search about reducing on a HH. I never covered all the holes, just most. If you cover all of them you get soot because there's no air, just gas. Try reading up on it... It's very easy. Oh... Your bead should be relatively cool and it only takes a second or 2.
