Hi,

I have two questions about wine stoppers and cork screws. (My brother has requested a set for his Christmas gift - 1 cork screw and 4 stoppers.)

1. Who makes the best quality? (Are some better than others?)

2. Do you have any problems with the glass coming loose when you are using the cork screw? I seem to put a lot of force on my cork screw sometimes.

Oh, and I use softglass. I still haven't done any boro yet.

Thanks for your help!

Eric

Maybe my first question wasn't clear. I am planning on making a set of wine stoppers for someone for Christmas, and I want to make sure that the bases I purchase are of good quality, won't rust, etc. I will be doing the glass work of course. So, anybody have any opinions on these?

Thanks,

Eric

The only winestopper findings I know of are from Aanraku. I just bought a few of them and they look to be of really nice quality. They are sold several places www.jodelglass.com is one off the top of my head.

I would like to find the kind that have the hidden corkscrew in them though, if anyone knows where to get those.

Hi Dawn,

Is this what you are looking for? Misha at Eugene Rain was nice enough to post this on the AGF board.

Yes, that's what I've seen from someone here. I suppose you have to make the bead on the end of the mandrel and glue it or do they make those specifically for beads as well?

Oh, I am a dedicated fan of the ones from woodturners in that link above. That hidden cork screw in the middle is my favorite. I thinke Karen Thomas of Karenthomas.us has some that are simply corkscrews through and have no bottle stopper. The bead would be the part you turn.
Also, it might be a bit strange but the stoppers don't come with that wooden piece in them. That is just an example.
