Apparently I have the wrong program for my glass. I did a batch anneal today and melted all my beads. I got my program from this forum a little while back, but just never used my kiln until now. It's not a huge deal that I melted my beginner beads, but it is kind of a bummer. Can someone direct me for a program? I have COE 104 glass.
Thank you!
Vickie
what was the temp you programmed? If your temp was correct, then your kin is hotter than it says it is.

This is the program I had going:
Batch annealing
0-970 over 3 hours, hold 30 min
rampdown over 1 hr to 880, hold 15 min
rampdown over 1 hr to 780, hold 15 min
rampdown over 1 hr to 680, hold 15 min
rampdown over 1 hr to 580, hold 15 min
then turn off.

Is it possible your kiln controller is set for Celsius?

Yikes Vickie! That's rough...
I hope you took pics of your beads before you went to anneal them.

I thought about that - that it's set to celsius, but when I programmed it, it flashed "F". So does that mean that my program sounds right?

If it's flashing "F" with the temperature reading, it's in fahrenheit not celsius - but there is no way the glass would melt at 970 F. It would have to be closer to 1370.
What make of controller do you have?
What make of kiln?

Also - is it possible that your glass is actually NOT 104 COE?
I ask this because I did some batch annealing for a buddy who mixed
up his Satake glass with his effetri. We found this out when I was scraping
the "cabochons" off the bottom of my kiln .

Is the (OMG I can't remember what it's called) temperature reader thingie all the way in the kiln good?

Yes, that's exactly it! UGH> I didn't have the thermomter thing stuck in all the way, so it didn't detect how hot it really was and got way hotter than it should. DUH. Darn. Well, now I know and at least it was just beginner beads and not something totally fancy. My husband said they were pretty cool all warped and stuff, but they're fuzzy on the backside, so I can't use them.
THANK YOU!!

There is no such thing as scrap glass. It's just unborn frit.

Pssst - you could mail them to me and I'll grind down the backs for you if there's enough glass to do that...and you'll have your first cabs :) Just a thought!

That's really sweet of you. They're not that worth it though. I saved three and thought I might file them a bit and make them into pendants. The rest of my round beginner beads I tossed yesterday.

Grind them down and put pin backs on them.,,then you can still SELL or GIVE them away!

If they have a little bead release still in them, would that still work? I never can get all the bead release out.

Not really stupid at all. I'm glad I thought of it (and kinda shocked I did too!). One of those super simple mistakes that can easily get overlooked.

You all have such great ideas for what to do with these lumps of glass. After being all depressed about that batch, it really puts a smile on my face. Thanks!

what I did was stuck a cubic zirconia in the holes if they settled on "TOP" of the cabachon....A couple looked like little vases, and I stuck tiny silk flowers in the and some folks loved them!
