I have an idea for a bead that would require encasing striking red. I know through trial & error that pastel red does not encase well but I've never tried striking red. Before I waste precious time does anyone know if this will work?

Your best bet would be to make a clear core, put striking red over that, then encase the whole thing in clear. That is the only way I've been able to nicely encase reds. Good luck!

Thanks for the help! I will try it that way and keep my fingers crossed.

And the striking red will be a lot more vibrant with the clear core, as well.

I agree, a 'clear sandwich' is the way to go.

I made a very small CIM Bordello bead yesterday. It's DARK. Today I did the clear/red/clear version and it's a lighter shade with much more light passing through. Much better!

Yes, sandwiched red is the way to go. It makes a really pretty trans candy red that way.

OMG that's drop-dead gorgeous!!!!!!

BTW, Joe, I just played with my very first shards from you (DSP). They're excellent. Thank you!

Welcome Karen, and thank you :)

Now I kind of want to make more of these.

I spent a good deal of time recently trying to get a nice crimson. I haven't encased my striking red yet. I put it over a white core for a really sparkly red. Then, since my effetre special dark red turned itself a kind of tomato soup color I tried to encase it--since I didn't know it couldn't be done. I used transparent pink; it was OK. I then used transparent dark lavender, transparent blue rose (I think), and transparent medium amethyst. The dark lavender worked well, but the best dark crimson was from encasing with the medium amethyst. It was perfect and matched the dark red pens perfectly.
