Last night and today I have been having my black vetro reducing ... almost like DSP . I know its Vet black thats the only black I have purchased .

This happens to me also when using the vetro black. It seems if you heat it too much it starts to pit and devit. I use moretti, and save the vetro for when I want an organic design. Sorry this doesn't help you.

Nikki hates it 'cause of that....(I know that 'cause she was complaining about it in a thread the other day ;))

I had a batch like that too. Almost reminds me of dk silver plum. It goes metallic on me. How come when I want metallic I can't get it (like out of DSP) but I use plain ole black and I get metallic? Some times you can't win......

Why yes, she does. And as soon as she checks every stinkin' rod of the 2# worth of "Is this Moretti, Vetro, or intense black?" you'll be taking it off her hands.

The silvering drives me crazy, even though I think I can soak the beads to remove it.. I'd rather just work with Moretti.

The silvering is cool if "that" is what your wanting.

I ordered some also, from Jon, and I am new. I did not know what it was doing. All I know is, it is hard to melt, and it pops, no matter how slow I try to heat it with my Hothead torch. So I just left it alone, hoping I could learn more, by reading here. Maybe try and use it again, when I get more experience. Right now, its now working for me, and no black glass at all right now.Whaaahhh!!! I love black.

Nell--if you have a coffee-cup warmer, try sticking the ends on that & getting them nice & hot before you stick them into the flame, that might keep them from exploding on you!

True... But it's not. ;) It also seems to melt slower, maybe that's just me?

The coffee-cup warmer or the top of the kiln works well for preheating.

Hmmm. vetro black - that may explain what I got on a bead I made today. This is a vet black barrel, with moretti mustard yellow and opal yellow, pretty heavily worked. In person it has a silvery, sparkly look that is fairly attractive, but has a really rough texture. When I tried to photograph it (please excuse the crummy photography) it looked like a pitted mess:

I'm wondering if etching might help? Anyone tried?

I've had the same problem, and I had some kind of crappy batch where I could not stop my glass from popping, I'll never buy vetrofond black again
