:-k Weird combination, I know. I have had someone ask for something with turtles and another person ask for a bead that is a hippo. HELP! I have had a few ideas about the turtle, but would like to see what others have done. Also, I have no flippin' clue on how I would even begin to make a hippo! A HIPPO? Are you kiddin' me? Please post your turtle beads and any ideas on hippos and I'll be eternally thankful!\\:D/

I've made hippos. I start with a very round, pudgy bead and then add a donut bead on one side (usually the right since I'm right handed). To the donut bead I add large dots of glass on the top and bottom to build up the mouth area; I tend to make the top mouth part fatter- it looks better that way in my opinion. I then add four dots for legs. Once the legs are the size I want I gently heat them and flatten them, so the hippo can stand. I then take a thick stringer and add the tail and two dots for ears. I heat the ears a bit, poke with my dental pick and sort of pull back at the same time to make an ear cavity. Next comes the teeth. I add four white dots to the mouth- two up and two down and melt in a bit. I add more white to the top teeth. I add the eyes next and then return to gently heat the top teeth and pull down into points.

Wow wizzie, I'd love to see pics of your hippo. My friend's knickname is "Hippo" (not sure why) and she's been bothering me to make a hippo bead. I just haven't even tried yet for fear of what it might turn out like!

Ok. Here is my Myrtle the Turtle. hehe

This turtle uses R108 cane. I have gotten my son to agree to take pics if there is interest in a tutorial.

Let me know and I will work on it.

I make hippos all the time. Its my fave animal and I have a collection of about 1000+ hippo collectibles. I will see if I can take some pictures tomorrow of some of the hippos I have made. You know that there is a true story going around right now of a turtle that adopted a baby hippo after those really bad Tunamis.

Wow, thanks so much for sharing, everyone. Holly, I'm looking forward to seeing your hippos.

Great turtle, Christi. Love the pattern on the back. Would LOVE to see a tutorial on that one!

Once again, I hope that I am able to contribute a tutorial to this forum someday. Sometimes I feel so guilty soaking up all this info and not leaving any!

YOU GUYS ARE GREAT!=D>

BTW Holly....It is so funny that you collect hippos too. I'll have to tell my friend Kelly! She's got them everywhere! She got started collecting them because her fiance calls her hippo. (Not sure why...she's not shapped like one or anything!) What's the story on your hippo collection?

I also noticed that you are in "Sunny Central Florida" I'm jealous because I'm freezin' my :moon: off here in Cleveland, Ohio! We are planning a family vacation down to Siesta Key. We hear they have a great beach. I'd love to go to the Caribbean again, but my kids are still too small. Siesta Key sounded like a good compromise!

I realize this is kind of late to help you, but I found a simple way to make cute "totem turtles"....it is super easy:

I use my lentil press...and then I add a little "head" of glass around one of the ends of the lentil. Then I add 4 little dots for feet. Then I take my hemostats and mash the feet...this gives them little toes. Then I add dots for eyes and melt them in...well actually I do the eyes before the feet...do the feet last. Here's one, a favorite:

So cute....And no...it was not too late. I've been putting off doing these. I need to get a lentil press. Haven't had much luck with my pillow & tab presses:( Maybe I should look for a used lentil press. Anna, PM me if you know of a user friendly brand of lentil press.

I will see if I can work on a tut for the turtle. Actually quite easy to make. It requires R108 though.

I am sorry I never saw this thread before.. I make my turtles using ORRB press to begin with and then add my legs, then the head and finally the tail!

I actually made a hippo...I was trying to make something like the Egyptian Faience Hippo, "William" ...He was pretty easy:

21783

He is basically a small round bead..with four raised dots for legs, a smaller dot for a tail...his head is 3 dots, graduated in size with 2 little ears.
