I was making some flower cane and I think I got some gold fumng by accident. I had my white rod in the back of the flame while I was meltng a blob of Rubino to encase with. I noticed the white rod was turning a beautiful shade of light caramel. I went ahead and encased an made my cane but now I'm wondering why god fuming can't be done with rubino - I'll give this a try tonight but I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this effect?

I didn't think there was that much gold in Rubino to do that with...interesting. The only time I've gotten fume was when there was actual metal in the flame - some of the borosilicate colors will 'self fume' - like Silver Strike, but I've never seen a soft color do that.

I have. In exactly the same circumstances you describe, keeping a white rod warm while melting rubino to make encased stringers. But I just flash the white rod in the flame a bit to burn off whatever that fume is.
But I think I'll try a more controlled experiment someday now that I know it wasn't just a fluke.

Bulseye have a new rod that self strike "blue luster" and it just fumes itself silver. Gorgeous!
