When Oxy tank runs to low to make a marble-what do you do?

I've been making marbles for the past 15 years. I own two Oxy tanks that are about 54" high with a diameter of 9.1" (holds 251 cu ft). I've got a gauge on it, I know how much oxy I need to make a marble, and I know when I don't have enough oxy in the tank I'm using to make another marble from the tank I'm using. So, what do YOU do?

You could probably get some stringer or cane prep knocked out for next time. (I'd say get yourself an oxycon and it will never happen again!)

I work boro, with a Carlisle CC. Last time I checked, I get about 8 marbles out of a tank. I use 3/4" clear rod. I have a foot pedal for the outer flame, which I use aLot. I've never heard of concentraters that could handle this for, like, under $10,000.

That's fair. I've seen folks daisy chain them together to get some pretty serious results going, but it does get pricey fast.

You want to get one or two oxycons and a Homefil unit.

That set up can refill one of your tanks in a day or two while you use the other tank.

If you look into the details I think you will find it worth the effort.

I have to disagree on recommending homefill systems. The pressures involved are not sustainable over the long run, IMO. Check out Torch Talk or Concentrated Lampworkers groups in Facebook in their file sections on how to build an on-demand system with a compressor. Or buy one from Oxygen Frog or https://www.highvolumeoxygen.com

I have the smallest one and it runs my Mirage no problem and my psi never goes over 148 and I never run out of O2.

Thanks Dave.

I haven't been tracking the details since I looked into this setup a half dozen years ago.

Hi Dave. From what I gather most folks use Oxygen Frog over HVO due to price, politics (BS law suit by HVO against Oxygen Frog), and customer service.
That said either one of their systems are better than oxycons, they produce higher PSI and will fill a K tank faster also.
I usually leave the last 100lbs in the tank to avoid any sediment in the tank getting into my lines. But I use the last of the tank for prep work, stringers,
points, and small pieces for use on larger pieces.

Gerald, I hope some of the suggestions have been helpful as far as what to make with the last dregs of oxygen! Sorry for starting a discussion on oxycon setups!

^^^^What he said about the last of the tank. I mostly make up my blanks (16 or 20mm attached to handles) 'cause I hate it when I have to make one just prior to starting a marble and then get a burn.

I would run like hell LOL

Actually some people use Y connectors with both tanks attached, that way you can switch the fuel source pretty fast from one take to the other.
