If you could only buy one...

If you could only buy one silver glass what would it be? I am a newbie (lampworking for about a year) and would love to try some silver glass after seeing all the beautiful stuff you guys are coming up with.

Since it is so expensive I can really only afford to buy one. Which one would you suggest? Due to my lack of experience I would like one that is easier to work. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Bubbyanne 2009-02-13 10:50am

Triton would be one suggestion.
It reduces easily and you can get many colors out of it depending on how you work it.
Also it encases beautifully and keeps it's iridescence when you do.
All around a pretty cool glass.

My second recommendation would be Psyche. It's easy to work with and does really cool stuff as well.
Actually, between these two I am having a hard time saying which would be better.

I'd do a triton search so you can see all the neat effects that you can get with it. Same with Psyche. It might help you choose depending on which effects you like better.

MaryBeth 2009-02-13 10:59am

I agree with Bubby! It would be Triton. It's very easy to work with and can produce a mirror finish with a rainbow irridescense!

Aubs 2009-02-13 11:06am

I would choose Psyche! I am pretty new to using the silver glass myself, but I LOVE the different effects you can get with it.....you can get deep purples and browns by reducing lightly, or full out blue mirror metallic by reducing a few times! And it encases very well

LyndaC 2009-02-13 11:40am

Howaco has DH (including Triton and Psyche) on sale right now and you can buy by the rod.
Why try just one when you can get a rod of each, right?!? I just bought ordered some thismorning to try...can't wait.

Bubbyanne 2009-02-13 11:50am

Okay, I really hate telling people to do a search, lol.
I went to Hayley's SE4! FOURTH Silver Color How To and Exchange thread and pulled up a post which has links to beads that showcase individual glass colors.
You can scroll down the thread, click on the links to see what others have done with triton or psyche (among many other glass colors).
Here's the link to that post.
SE 3 Tips and Showcase of Individual Glass
I hope this helps you choose instead of making it more difficult lol.

I love me some Gaia. Although I haven't tried many of the others but DH's Gaia worked really easy for me.

LyndaC 2009-02-13 12:26pm

Bubby~ Thanks for sharing that link. It's extremely helpful! As many hours as I've spent here I don't know how I missed it.

artwhim 2009-02-13 1:02pm

Triton because it really has the Wow factor, but is still very versatile and easy to use. Next would be Psyche and then Gaia, both very agreeable to work with. Oh, and DH's new Aurae looks like it will be an absolute winner too. Haven't played with it enough yet to know for sure.

Thanks for all the replies. I know everyone is going to have a favorite. I figured I would just go with the one getting the most votes. =) BUT with lynda's lead I might get to try a few. Thanks lynda!
Bubby, I did seach but honestly I was overwelmed by it all. I got a million answers for "silver glass" and then trying to search by each name was hard too. The link you gave is very helpful and I wouldn't have looked in that room. Thanks for sharing

honey*bee 2009-02-13 2:53pm

TRITON!!

Bubbyanne 2009-02-13 3:46pm

Yeah, that's why I hate saying do a search, besides it does sound kinda rude and didn't like it the few times I've been told to do one.
If it sounded unkind please know I really didn't mean it that way. I apologize if it came off rude.
I myself am miserable at searching and going through a bajillion threads and posts to find what you are looking for can be frustrating.
Hayley's silver glass exchange threads are a wealth of information on the silver glasses. She has a few of them now but she does a great job of pulling the more important information and putting it into the first few posts so it's easy to find.
Her books on the subject too are worth getting as well if you really want to get into trying the different silver glasses out there.

I would vote for psyche because it's very easy to use, and seems to be cheaper from most vendors than some of the other DH colours and other silver colours too. Plus, its a gorgeous colour!

GT Nebula is really great also... here's a likn to something made with nebula

I totally agree - Triton. Then Psyche.

Picasso and Miro for wonderful blues and greens.

PSYCHE, you can get so many colors out of it and it reduces easily.

Katie Gee 2009-02-13 11:32pm

Aion2. I just love this stuff.

Have you considered getting a variety pack. That way you can have several to play with.

Hayley 2009-02-13 11:59pm

Hey Barb, thanks for posting the links! Sorry I missed this thread earlier!

Based on the feedback from teaching silver glass classes, I think if you want one reducing silver glass that's easy to use and very versatile, I have to agree with most posters here that Triton is the one. Depending on how you work it, you get from silver to pink to green to dark blue iridescence. You can also get matte/satin finish in addition to the mirror one. It's also one of the reducing silver glass that retains its iridescence under encasement.

And when you are ready to play with striking silver glass - Steph Bonniwell and I did a tutorial, the link is on my siggy line.

Hope this helps!

Just thought I'd throw in a plug for Reichenbach Silver Brown. It's cheap and turns into wonderful colors all by itself in the flame.

sortaflower 2009-02-14 12:33pm

hmmm for reactions Kronos is my fav:

Another Psyche fan here. Then Triton.
I too order from Howaco so you can one of everything. It's a great way to try new colors without breaking the bank!
My last order had all silver colors with just one or two rods of each one.
I do seem to go through Psyche the fastest.

Starrr 2009-02-14 5:50pm

Gaia
Nyx
Triton

I can't get Psyche to do anything

nagibeads 2009-02-14 6:55pm

Triton or Psyche...just gorgeous.

DesertDreamer 2009-02-14 7:02pm

Triton for shiny and Terranova2 for colors. I just played with the Terranova today for the first time, and I'm totally in love! It's easy to get all kinds of colors, and always a wonderful surprise. I'm waiting impatiently for the kiln to be done so I can see!

Triton is so easy to use. It's THE color that convinced me to try all the silvered glass one more time, when my earlier attempts all led to failures. Now I'm hooked!

GiGiC 2009-02-16 8:28am

Thanks for all your input everyone. I went with a few rods of Triton, Psyche and Kahos.

Bubby, no offence taken!!! You were able to find a most helpful thread that showed me what each glass looked like which I didn't come across. I appricate your input. Thank you again.

Hayley, thanks for making such a great thread and I will look into your tut if I find success with these glasses. = )

Again thanks everyone!! What a great community of people.
