Ammonite fossil effect
Hi, i have been trying to make a Ammonite fossil effect pendant but
can't figure it out. i have tryed useing a fat twisty rod & then coiling it up (spiral). But that isn't getting the right look. Does anyone know how to make one useing boro? Have you seen a tutorial doing this, if so where do I look? Thanks, Cynthia in Australia |
I've never done it, but maybe make a tapered rod, use a knife, diamond shears, or necking tool to put in the segmentation, *then* coil it?

Hi, Here's a picture of a real fossil one, I want to make a glass
pendant one. Thanks |
ooh, those are cut to reveal the chambers. Haven't made one in ages, but I make them by sandwiching a colour between 2 parts of clear glass. the colour must go right to the edge. then I coat the resulting post in powder, such as exotic red, heat it all in and pull it out into a taper while twisting the glass. If you heat and pull from the middle you have two tapers for two ammonites in one go. Then I spiral roll them up, melt it all in, flatten them somewhat and kiln. Once out of the kiln they get ground down on my diamond wheel to expose the chambers (ie past the twist axis so you don't have that central twist line). You don't need to polish them, I wash them with demineralised water after the grinding, let them dry on top of my kiln and then garage them inside, face up. Once they're hot enough, I punty them out, flamepolish the face, add a loop and put them back in for re-annealing.
hope that all makes sense. |

I have made a lot of ammonite pendants and charms. Some have 2 holes so you can wear them both ways.
Here are some pics: Charm: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4036/...891f41f2_o.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2648/...001184b9_o.jpg Pendants: These are all made with boro. :-$ i am working on an e-book to make these ( not sure if it is what you are lookign for. ) |

I thought about buying Bavarian presses, the ammonite one & the seahorse one,
but wondered how hard it is to get the pre- pressed shape right before you use the bead press. How did you find useing it? Thanks, Cynthia |
