Why are my colors changing?

I have an assortment pack of Moretti Glass that has a red color and a yellow color that when I make beads out of them I end up with a dull purple gray color. I am using MAPP gas if that makes any difference. Am I overheating the glass or is it a problem of having a reducing or oxidizing flame?

Sounds like you're working too close in the flame. Back up to about 1 inch away from the large blue cone. I've made lots of gray beads!

Yep, sounds like you are in the bottom part of the flame, which is burning the crap out of it. You need to work in the top part of the cone, and when in doubt, go out~!

I got that very same lovely color with alabaster dark rose. I had just changed cylinders and had a great flame going. When I got "swampwater" grey I decided that I had overheated the glass and burned it. I tried again with the same color rose and held it waaaaaay out at the tip of the flame. I got a nice pink bead. I have a sneaky hunch that yellow and red are problem colors anyway and don't need much help to morph into some other amazing color that you didn't want.

Hmmmm, are you REALLY a "Baron"? That may have something to do with it!
ps. i know that dull purple gray color you mean , stay out further from the end of the torch, about 3 inches or more.

Yellows and reds have a tendancy to strike more in the flame, and darken their colours. Which can be quie nice on occasion. That said, I don't seem to be able to do anything with the corals without them turning a greyish brownish shade of some sort.

If you want a coral color without too much trouble try the opalino carnelian. Quite pretty!
