Is there a difference between red brass and yellow brass?
Hi Everybody,
I've been reading about how brass bubbles when it is used in lampworking and I noticed that there is red brass and yellow brass. Red brass is 85% copper 15% zinc and yellow brass is 70% copper 30% zinc. Is there a difference in the two when used in beads? Thanks for you help with this. |
Good question, I didn't know that!

I do know that copper fumes are poisonous.

The zinc in the brass is what makes the bubbles

You think it's bad to melt into beads... don't even think about welding galvanized (zinc) anything.. and both brass and copper are metals to weld with great caution and lots and lots of ventilation (and it will still give you a weird taste in your mouth for a couple of days... pthahhh! (sorry.. bad flashbacks.. hehehe pun intended.. for any welders out there ;))

Zinc fume fever is like the flue. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it.
I won't heat zinc unless I'm wearing a mask or I'm outside with a strong fan and hopefully some wind. I have noticed milk and naproxen sodium take the edge off it. |
Meker.. I totally hear ya.. we were working in a shop with a huge industrial fan doors open from both ends of the shop (even if winter) and a back vented hood..
I also seem to recall we discovered milk did help although I'd never heard of the naproxen.. thanks for the tip! |
So-I'm thinking the red brass has less zinc-maybe it will have smaller bubbles?
