Q for anyone using a Dremel flexshaft...

OK....so mine came with one and I've never gotten around to even trying to hook it up until yesterday.

Mine's fairly old (I see they have a new flexshaft out that has a comfort grip) and is the straight barrel one.

My question is, is it just a matter of taking the collet and collet nut off the dremel and attaching to the flexshaft and then attaching the other end to the dremel to drive it? Specifically I'm wondering about this driver nut that I've seen mentioned. I don't have a driver nut or at least I don't recall seeing one anywhere. Is it a separate piece? Is it built in? Do I need it for the older style flexshaft?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Wow, that is great.
I have a flexshaft, and have no idea how to attach it properly. Although I bought it in a Dremel kit, there were no instructions whatsoever. I haven't found any online either.
I just attached it directly to the Dremel tool, and it takes some time between when I turn the tool on to when the other end starts moving. It also gets very hot, even though I make sure that the shaft is mostly straight. Then I read that you have to lubricate it. I didn't know how to do that either.
I finally packed the thing away...

Rose,

Which model dremel do you have?

I found these instructions online: http://66.77.255.87/Images/DREMELMAN...%20275-395.pdf

and they explained how to attach the flexshaft in enough detail that I realized I was missing a piece.

Hope that helps!!

Thanks Yee!
I don't remember seeing the driver cap... it is probably in the box, but I didn't know what it was. I just tightened the thing down a lot, I think that was a bad idea.
Those directions even tell how to lubricate it, and how often.
What a concept!

I know....instructions, right???? I don't even know if I ever got an instruction book with my kit.

Oh well. At least I know there is a resource out there for me to reference. The folks at Dremel are super helpful. One time I emailed and got a response rightaway. This time I called, totally didn't expect anything other than for them to tell me where to buy the missing part and they're sending it free of charge.

I like Dremel :D

You also need to hang up your Dremel. I don't remember if the instructions say something about this (and I'm too lazy to check), but the flex shaft doesn't really work well unless you have the tool suspended somewhere above working level. The shaft doesn't have to be perfectly straight, but you can't have the Dremel lying on the table and use the flex shaft. There's a holder you can buy that's basically a pole with a hook on the top that clamps onto your table. Shouldn't be much of a trick to rig up something by yourself, either.

Check the box for the driver cap. I know I had some funky little extra piece for my flex shaft, so yours is probably in there somewhere.

My flex shaft doesn't take any particular time to get moving from the time that I turn it on. I don't notice it getting hot, but it's possible that it does warm up and I just don't think about it.
