Burgundy glass?

I bought a new top and can't find the right color of burgundy glass to make beads for jewelry. Any suggestions? It's dark...like Merlot.

tammydownunder 2011-11-27 2:55pm

Effetre had a machine pulled Wine color that might work. If not, there are some lovely burgundy in Gaffer.

Best of luck :-)

CIM bordello

Lorraine Chandler 2011-11-27 3:21pm

Mix up your own recipe until you get the color you want or instead of trying to match go complimentary, or contrasting.

emoon 2011-11-27 4:12pm

Have you tried layering transparents? Maybe red and light brown? I would try several combinations, just for fun!

Elizabeth Beads 2011-11-27 4:16pm

CiM Simply Berry is close to Merlot.

Sheila D. 2011-11-27 4:41pm

I just held up the Bordello and it's very close. Simply Berry is way to purple.
I was hoping for an opaque.
Tammy, do you know the number of the Wine?

PaulaD 2011-11-27 5:39pm

Lauscha Black Cherry is the perfect Burgundy color.

tammydownunder 2011-11-27 7:59pm

I wish I could help you but sadly, we've lost two of our glass suppliers and I'm pretty sure I got it from one of them. I know they called it wine but I'm not sure what the effetre number was.

Sheila D. 2011-11-27 9:02pm

I'll go to Frantz this week and see if they have the Wine. (glass..that is):)

Elizabeth Beads 2011-11-27 10:19pm

I think you will find Bordello too dark, it is a very saturated color.

You might try Effetre Purple Red or CiM Lipstick for a pastel burgundy.

devardi burgundy

Devardi has a really nice deep burgundy. And, it's decent to work with, not shocky like many of their colors. The bigger beads with the silver trails in the picture are burgundy. The smaller ones are mixed with a transparent orange. I've only ever used their transparent burgundy but they do have an opaque one as well. And the price is right. Good luck.

DesertDreamer 2011-11-27 10:47pm

How about Messy Valentine? If that's too red, you could deepen it with a layer of Bordello.

Sheila D. 2011-11-28 1:18pm

Effetre Purple red is....well, red! That's the glass I use for my peppemints!
I've never heard of Valentine.
I love the Devardi burgundy! Think I'll check it out.

The number for the opaque Effetre Wine is 452

tammydownunder 2011-11-28 1:56pm

452 is dark brown red. The hand/machine pulled effetre I had was transparent.

Roo Blaty 2011-11-28 2:02pm

mmmmmmmm.....merlot........

(that's all, I've got nothing to actually add to the conversation)

truegem 2011-11-28 2:16pm

lol Roo!

One of the Effetre browns is actually a reddish brown. Can't remember the number, though...

Sheila D. 2011-11-28 2:20pm

Maybe I'll take my blouse to Frantz and pick out just the right color!!:)

If you do that, be sure to get a few different shades anyways. Many reds turn different colors after being worked in the flame.

Maybe batches differ. I used Purple Red for Texas A&M colors (maroon and white) and it was perfect.

theglasszone 2011-11-30 12:22am

I have a Lauscha color called Vampire Wine...could that be what you're looking for?

Batches vary greatly. Most of the effetre reds I get differ from batch to batch.

sweetiedog 2011-11-30 1:20pm

Effetre dark brown is what I use for a burgundy ...

You probably want to buy in person as the brown batches for Effetre vary a lot. I was actually hoping to buy a brown but this particular batch was very much red so I use it as a burgundy instead.

R4GlassStudio 2011-11-30 1:32pm

I would be happy to send you a sample of a bunch to check out.
I think color 438 may be a good one to try. You have to remember, ALL reds change batch to batch, so trying to buy with out seeing it, will be a challenge. The 438 I have is really close to the pic in this link.
Let me know if I can help,
Ron

This is my suggestion. 452. mine was not transparent. It looks great etched! These have a wrap of clear spiraled and melted in just for the striation effect. I love love love them. They are almost more brown before they are etched. I suppose it depends on how you work the glass too. This would also be the perfect base to start with if you wanted to do some layers and tweek the color.

Thanks you guys for all the suggestions! I didn't want you to think I forgot about this thread... so here's a picture of the blouse. It's darker than in the photo, (new camera on santa's list) and the sleeves have a black thread in them. I have made some test beads and Robin, Foster Fire has sent me some older Moretti brown that is more burgundy, I think that's going to be the one. Thanks Robin! I'll probably end up mixing the colors up a little since the top has alot of different textures. The buttons are pewter.

FosterFire 2011-12-05 8:14pm

Glad to help!

Elizabeth Beads 2011-12-07 7:37am

Now I see why Simply Berry wouldn't work. But it did match the Merlot I looked at - lol!

We want to see the beads when they are done Sheila.

:)

Yes...I wish I didn't have 30 irons in the fire right now (so to speak!) But I do want to wear it on Christmas. So as soon as I get my tree decorated, throw a Christmas party, bake cookies for dad...send cards...and keep my Etsy running...maybe I can make something for myself!
