Working Successfully with Reactive Glasses

This class evolved from Julie's presentation on reactive (silvered) glasses at Hot Time in the Mountains in Asheville, NC in 2008. Julie spent many months experimenting with reactive glass and the resulting demo and her lengthy handout were so fantastic we asked Julie to turn her in-depth study into a class.

The cost of the class for Southern Flames members is $220, and $245 for non-members, which includes at least ¼ lb. of reactive glass (Double Helix and Precision/R4), the updated version of Julie's extensive Hot Time booklet, and other materials.

CLASS DESCRIPTION: The class will begin with an overview of Julie's approach to experimenting with this pricey (but WONDERFUL) glass. Julie will discuss the different types of reactive glasses (striking, reducing [light vs. dark]), show examples of various colors, and demonstrate the methods she uses for making and documenting test sample beads. Students will then have the opportunity to work at making the various test beads for themselves.

More demos will follow and students will have an opportunity after each demo to make the bead as demonstrated, as well as to experiment with the same bead using other reactive colors. There will be tips and suggestions, time for inspiration, experimenting, and brainstorming.

After the students have become familiar with the ins and outs of reactive glasses, the second half of the class will focus on more complex designs adding additional elements such as hanabi cane, metals, layering, etc.

If time permits, students will experiment with the knowledge they've gained by applying it to the styles of beads which they are personally comfortable with making, learning how to replace "ingredients" in their own favorite bead styles with this versatile glass.
