HotHead Help!!!
 

Halfway through my first 5-gallon tank of propane, I started losing pressure to my brand new hot head torch. I switched to a fresh tank, but the problem continued; it was fine for a couple of minutes when I first turned it on, then the flame would get lower and lower until it was useless.

I took the torch apart, wiped everything down, rand pipe cleaner through all the holes and tubes, and soaked the orifice in acetone overnight. Put it all back together, still had the same problem.

Then I tried using a pin on the orifice; the hole wasn’t big enough for the pin to enter (is this normal, or maybe my problem?). Still no improvement. I switched to a third fresh tank, but that made no difference.

Now I notice that the on/off/adjustment knob on the torch turns much farther to the left (open) than it used to; after a certain point, it just kinda spins. Another possible problem?

My hose hangs more or less vertical when I disconnect it (so it drains every night, but I’ve never seen anything on the floor below), and when connected, it’s above the top of the tank (that’s supposed to prevent gunk flowing into the hose).

D’ya think I need a new orifice? Adjustment or repair to the knob? A new torch? An all-new tank of gas? A new hobby? Help!

I am afraid I can only say I am sorry you are having trouble. :(

I am on a HH also, but use the 1 pound Mapp cans so I am not familiar with your setup. I have never taken my torch head apart, so I cannot even help with that part. I am not even sure why I am replying except for HH solidarity!

This is a repost. Did you read my post in your other thread?

When I used a hothead in winter, if it was too cold, my torch would do just exactly what you are describing. if you are keeping your propane tank somewhere where the temperature is below freezing, your hothead won't work. Pretty much the only thing you can do is wait for the weather to warm up. If you do not have cold weather affecting your pressure than I don't know what to tell you.
