You can do black and silver with mica powder...I like macropearl for it. Have pics on here somewhere. I've never done well with red and black, can't tell them apart when hot, lol.

I'd guess it just looks really dark, which could be easily confused with being black...of course, if any part of the frit did hit the ivory, it would also turn black.

I think it works because it makes the outer layer and inner layer expand and contract at the same rate. Plus, there's probably less of the problematic color, too.

Yep, just manually go turn it down at a slower rate. Like drop it 50 degrees, wait half an hour, then 50 more, etc. Slow, PITA, but it'll work.

Get a terra cotta planter thing. Place a rod of a color you don't like on it-across it. Or a pot, or whatever will fit in your kiln. Heat it up to the top temp you put it at for working/annealing....
